Fantasy K-Dramas That Are Absolutely Perfect 10/10

K-dramas feature some of the most captivating fantasy stories ever created. Korean television series have enjoyed popularity for decades, but the recent surge in interest began in the late 2010s and early 2020s, fueled by groups like Blackpink and BTS, along with shows such as Squid Game and The Glory, which showcase rich East Asian culture. Today, nearly every major streaming service offers a dedicated K-drama section, providing fans of the genre with an abundance of choices.

Moreover, many contemporary K-dramas are masterpieces that warrant significantly more recognition. While the genre traditionally relied on melodramatic and telenovela formulas, it has broadened to include every conceivable sub-genre. Although romance remains the most popular theme, Korean filmmakers are exploring a wide range of genres, from chilling horror K-dramas to clever comedies infused with slice-of-life elements.

Nonetheless, fantasy is arguably one of the most vital markets that seems to be experiencing exponentially increasing demand each year. Additionally, Korean fantasy offers particularly engaging narratives, as K-dramas often conceal thought-provoking plots beneath attention-grabbing hooks like formidable mythical creatures, daring ghost hunters, or intricately crafted alternate universes that are both immersive and entertaining. Indeed, the finest fantasy K-dramas are celebrated for their invaluable contributions to the genre.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (also known simply as Goblin) is universally regarded as a must-watch K-drama. Nearly a decade after its premiere in 2016, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God continues to be a landmark series that redefined K-drama conventions, featuring a star-studded cast led by the remarkable Gong Yoo (Kim Shin) and an iconic original soundtrack.

This fantasy rom-com follows Kim Shin, the titular “Goblin,” who was a Royal Army General during the Goryeo period cursed with immortality. To escape his eternal torment, he must find his soulmate, the fated Goblin’s bride. Unfortunately for him, his true love is Ji Eun-tak (Kim Go-eun), a young woman capable of seeing ghosts and summoning the Goblin at will. Despite their rocky beginnings, their destined romance concludes on a far sweeter note than one might expect.

Certain aspects of Guardian: The Lonely and Great God have not aged gracefully. For example, the notable age gap between Kim Shin and Ji Eun-tak may unsettle viewers with contemporary sensibilities. However, for every drawback, the drama presents at least two strengths—ranging from the beloved bromance between Goblin and Lee Dong-wook’s Grim Reaper to its meticulously curated costumes. Furthermore, this series undeniably elevated the standards for all subsequent K-dramas with its stunning cinematography, memorable quotes, and abundant charm.

There are many overused tropes that even die-hard fantasy fans grow weary of seeing repeatedly, making rare and truly unique fantasy stories all the more compelling. A prime example is Extraordinary You, a K-drama so distinctive that it will stand apart for years to come.

This acclaimed coming-of-age romance centers on Eun Dan-oh (Kim Hye-yoon), a terminally ill high school student who suddenly discovers her entire life is fictional—she is merely a character in an ongoing comic book. Upon learning she is destined to die, Dan-oh begins to rebel against her omnipotent author in an attempt to rewrite her fate. Along her journey, she falls for a nameless background character she names Ha-ru (Rowoon), which disrupts the entire narrative.

The relationship between Dan-oh and Ha-ru is not only one of the most endearing K-drama couples but also possesses genuine depth. Each episode of Extraordinary You unveils another layer of an elaborate conspiracy rooted in ancient Korean history. Unfortunately, as they learn through harsh experiences, nothing in their world can change without repercussions.

Doom at Your Service

Not every romantic fantasy K-drama requires intricate magic systems or fantastical settings. In this light, the urban fantasy of Doom at Your Service appears deceptively straightforward: after web novel editor Tak Dong-kyung (Park Bo-young) receives a brain cancer diagnosis, she catches the attention of Doom’s personification (Seo In-guk). Shortly thereafter, this godlike figure ensnares her in what seems like an impossible choice—either assist him in initiating an apocalypse or watch her loved one perish within 100 days.

However, Doom at Your Service compensates for its simple premise with some of the most emotionally stirring storylines in K-drama history. Each character is well-developed while the show’s mythology remains vague enough to allow viewers to fill in gaps themselves.

Romantic K-dramas are plentiful, but Doom at Your Service is a deeply philosophical experience that compels viewers to confront their own mortality, spirituality, and belief systems. Just as Tak Dong-kyung asks her closest friends what they would do if faced with an apocalypse, viewers too must reflect on their own dreams and regrets.

In truth,Doom at Your Service is criminally underrated—though this makes sense given its unassuming premise. The 2021 drama has transformative potential for viewers—whether it inspires them to pursue forgotten ambitions or simply provides food for thought about life’s nature—it’s impossible to finish this K-drama without gaining insights or shedding tears.

That said,Hotel del Luna epitomizes classic fantasy storytelling. This eerie K-drama follows Gu Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo), who becomes general manager of a hotel for ghosts at the request of its immortal owner Jang Man-wol (IU). With an eccentric staff of spirits and guests with unresolved issues checking in regularly, Chan-sung and Man-wol must collaborate to bring peace to these restless souls.

The premise alone is intriguing enough but what distinguishes Hotel del Luna is its highly stylized presentation. IU’s wardrobe resembles a whimsigothic daydream while set design and special effects enhance its high-fantasy elements. Everything from background music to color grading immerses viewers into the world of Hotel del Luna, creating an equally chilling yet exhilarating binge-watching experience.

Alchemy of Souls

No fantasy K-drama surpassesAlchemy of Souls. This Netflix original period drama follows two mages—an estranged noble named Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) and skilled assassin Naksu (Jung So-min and Go Youn-jung)—who form an unlikely bond as apprentice and mentor respectively. Despite Jang Uk being ostracized by his family, he remains a threat to his malevolent relatives’ schemes which quickly jeopardizes both his safety and Naksu’s budding romance.

Certainly,Alchemy of Souls stands out as one of the best K-dramas this decade. All thirty episodes vividly portray forbidden love alongside political intrigue within a gripping magic system that carries real stakes—and consequently real consequences for anyone who dares misuse it. Thus,Alchemy of Souls sets an unprecedented standard for fantasyK-dramas, establishing itself as a modern classic that will only improve with time.
