Fantasy Shows Featuring the Most Confusing Magic Systems

Most fantasy TV shows feature some form of magic, but that doesn’t guarantee they will be logically consistent. Magic and fantasy are intertwined, and it’s hard to think of more than a few fantasy shows that don’t incorporate magic in some way.

Magic can be complex. Although it is fictional, it still adheres to certain logic, rules, and audience expectations. There are numerous magical systems in media, with varying degrees of coherence. The fantasy shows listed here may be entertaining, but contemplating their magic often leads to confusion rather than awe.

Once Upon a Time is a seven-season ABC fantasy series that blends public domain and Disney characters into its grand narrative. Set in the fictional seaside town of Storybrooke, the inhabitants gradually realize they are all fairy-tale characters who have had their memories erased by an evil queen (Lana Parrilla).

Throughout its seven-year run, viewers saw characters from Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) to Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit) make appearances. With such a diverse cast from various properties, each possessing unique magic and rules, the storyline can become quite convoluted.

The original magic in season 1 is relatively simple, reminiscent of Snow White, featuring witches, curses, and straightforward solutions to break spells. As the series progresses, the introduction of magic from Aladdin, Peter Pan, and even Frozen creates a dizzying display of magical elements.

Game Of Thrones (2011-2019)

Game of Thrones is the iconic HBO fantasy series from the 2010s that remains one of the greatest fantasy TV shows despite its later struggles. The battle for the Iron Throne weaves an engaging narrative filled with politics, humanity, and magic.

Magic manifests in various forms within George R. R. Martin’s narrative. As Martin describes himself as a gardener in his writing approach, allowing the story to evolve organically rather than directing it, the magic often lacks clarity. Different types of magic exist, from the fiery prophecies of the Lord of Light to the nature magic of the Old Gods.

The initially ambiguous nature of this magic captivates viewers and opens up numerous storytelling possibilities. However, as the series progresses towards its conclusion, the magic becomes more defined and self-restrictive. By season 8’s end, some major events’ mechanics, such as the Night King’s survival against dragon fire, become inexplicable.

Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt with a sword on fire in superhero pose in The Witcher season 4

The Witcher, a Netflix series based on its namesake franchise most recognized for its video games, is an ongoing fantasy action show set for a fifth and final season. It has successfully navigated a significant casting change with Liam Hemsworth taking over as Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill in season 4.

The plot follows Geralt’s quest to protect Crown Princess Cirilla of Cintra (Freya Allen) while battling various monsters and adversaries along the way. Cirilla possesses Elder Blood, which grants her extraordinary magical abilities even within her already magical universe.

Magic plays a crucial role in The Witcher, yet despite having more defined rules than in the games or books, it often appears even less coherent than those mediums. The inconsistency regarding magical abilities is particularly perplexing since highly powerful characters seem limited to basic spells.
