Typically, when a horror film breaks records during its production, it’s for unusual reasons, such as the quantity of fake blood utilized. However, Final Destination: Bloodlines has made headlines for an unexpected achievement—it showcases the oldest individual ever set on fire on-screen. This revelation certainly took many by surprise, including fans of the franchise.
“We ignited numerous individuals for various scenes, including achieving a world record for the oldest person ever set aflame with Yvette Ferguson, who performed that full body burn in a stunning silver dress,” explained Bloodlines co-director Zach Lipovsky in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “This marks the oldest person ever to be set on fire on camera.“
Yvette Ferguson, a seasoned stuntwoman and former actress, was persuaded to come out of retirement at the age of 71 to portray the character of Mrs. Fuller. The dedicated stunt team has even reached out to Guinness World Records regarding her remarkable fiery achievement, and they are currently awaiting a response on this extraordinary milestone.
The pivotal scene unfolds in the 1960s, set within a restaurant located at the apex of a towering 400-foot structure. This dramatic moment was highlighted in the film’s trailer, showcasing the chaos that ensues as calamity strikes; individuals plummet to their demise while the restaurant erupts in flames, splitting apart catastrophically. Brec Bassinger, who portrays the character Iris in this intense scene, witnessed Ferguson’s full-body burn firsthand. “Oh, I was there when they ignited her on set!” she recounted. “I was close to her. It was breathtaking. Everyone erupted in applause…She was incredibly enthusiastic.“
“One of the unique qualities of Final Destination is its distinctive scale,” Lipovsky elaborated. “It provides that massive blockbuster feel typical of disaster movies, combined with an incredibly R-rated atmosphere, which is quite rare. You get the grand spectacle reminiscent of Roland Emmerich’s films, yet you witness the actual explosions, characters igniting, and their tragic downfalls without any cuts. It was truly exciting to blend both elements seamlessly.“
“The latest installment in New Line Cinema’s incredibly successful franchise transports viewers back to the origins of Death’s twisted sense of justice,” states the official synopsis for Final Destination Bloodlines. “Haunted by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie returns home to seek out the one person who may hold the key to breaking the cycle and rescuing her family from the gruesome fate that looms over them all.” This thrilling film features a talented cast, including Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and the late Tony Todd.
The initial responses to the sequel have been overwhelmingly positive, and audiences eagerly await to see how it measures up against the earlier installments of the franchise when the film is released in theaters on May 16th.
