On February 10, a tragic incident occurred when a Learjet 35A owned by Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil was involved in a fatal collision with a parked aircraft, specifically identified as a Gulfstream G-200. This harrowing event took place at approximately 2:39 p.m. local time as the jet veered off the runway while attempting to land at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona. According to a statement from Nashville-based attorney Worrick Robinson IV, the incident resulted in the death of one individual.
It is important to note that Vince Neil was not on board the aircraft at the time of the accident, which raises questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the flight. His attorney described the situation as “a rapidly evolving issue” that is currently under “ongoing investigation.” He also expressed that “Mr. Neil’s thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved,” indicating a deep sense of concern for those affected and appreciation for the critical assistance provided by first responders during this distressing time.
The FAA later confirmed that there were four individuals aboard the Learjet at the time of the incident. Tragically, the pilot lost their life, while the co-pilot and one passenger sustained serious injuries. The aftermath of this incident has raised significant concerns about aviation safety and the protocols in place to prevent such occurrences.
According to a preliminary report from WMTV 15 News, released on March 3 by the NTSB, surveillance and cell phone video footage captured crucial details of the incident. The footage revealed that the jet’s rear left landing gear was in an “askew” position as it approached the runway in Scottsdale, suggesting potential mechanical failure or pilot error.
The investigation also uncovered that the flight crew had previously reported issues during a landing in McAlester, Oklahoma, on June 20, 2024. This raises further questions about the aircraft’s maintenance history and the effectiveness of inspections conducted prior to the flight. The report detailed that the pilot had hired a mechanic to perform necessary maintenance, with additional maintenance carried out in December. Notably, a mechanic who serviced the landing gear reported that “nothing appeared unusual,” although they did note that the left landing gear “took an excessive amount of grease,” suggesting potential underlying issues.
