On April 8, 2025, renowned author Jillian Lauren, who is married to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was taken into police custody and later released on a $1 million bond following her involvement in a serious incident involving a shooting with the LAPD. Recently, the LAPD released video footage that captures Lauren holding a firearm and allegedly discharging it at police officers, which brings to light new details regarding the unfolding situation.
Insights from the Released Video and Audio Footage
The comprehensive 22-minute video, uploaded to the LAPD’s official YouTube channel on April 25, commences with a briefing by Public Information Director Jennifer Forkish. She articulates:
[T]This critical incident community briefing aims to provide the public with crucial details about the officer-involved shooting incident. You will soon view relevant video footage and learn about various pieces of evidence and police protocols linked to the case, enabling a clearer understanding of the events based on our current knowledge. It is essential to note that we are still in the initial phases of this investigation, which may take up to a year to conclude, and our comprehension of the incident may evolve as more evidence is gathered, scrutinized, and assessed. We refrain from making any determinations regarding the officers’ adherence to our established policies and the law until all facts are thoroughly understood and the investigation reaches its conclusion.
We advise viewers that the images and information presented may be distressing. Additionally, strong language may be used by individuals depicted in the video. Viewer discretion is advised.
As highlighted by Billboard, the footage ultimately depicts officers peering over a tall wooden fence into a yard, urgently urging a woman to drop her weapon or face the risk of being shot. The fence obstructs the camera’s view of what lies beyond it.
Subsequently, a voice is heard saying, “Ma’am, we’re trying to help you. You’re going to get shot. It’s the police,” followed by another officer exclaiming, “Oh, she racked it,” indicating that the suspect had cocked her firearm. A series of gunshots are then heard.
In a different segment of the video, which is recorded silently from Lauren’s backyard, she is seen emerging from her home without shoes, holding a pistol in her right hand. Additional footage shows her apparently raising the firearm, which is briefly visible before she turns and walks toward the doorway of the house.
Furthermore, Billboard reports that additional body camera footage captures Lauren lying on the ground in the middle of a residential street while police officers secure her with handcuffs, noting an injury on her arm. As reported by Loudwire on April 9, 2025, officers fired at Lauren after she failed to comply with commands to drop her weapon, resulting in a non-life-threatening shoulder injury.
According to NME, several officers identified themselves as either members of the police department or the California Highway Patrol. One clip shows [Lauren] exiting her residence while holding a black handgun, which she then appears to manipulate and discharge. NME specifies that this footage is recorded from a distance and lacks audio; however, there seems to be observable recoil, after which Lauren walks away.
The video also features LAPD Commander Alex Chogyoji, who clarifies:
While officers were in the rear yard of the residence, they observed a woman in an adjacent backyard armed with a handgun. The officers issued repeated verbal commands to Shriner to drop the handgun; however, she did not comply. Moments later, Shriner racked the handgun, aimed it at the officers, and fired, prompting an officer-involved shooting incident. Investigators recovered a 9mm Glock handgun that Shriner was wielding, along with a spent cartridge casing at the scene, which were booked as evidence.
NME notes that multiple 911 calls connected to the incident are included in the released footage. One particularly notable call seems to come from someone inside the home with Lauren after she was shot.
NME continues:
The individual informs the operator that Lauren was shot by someone during a police manhunt. Lauren is heard in the background recounting the events. “I had my gun, and he said, ‘Put down that gun. Put down that gun.’ I retorted, ‘Put down your fucking gun.’ And then he shot me,” Lauren explains. “There are three men on the other side of this fence here.”

Details Surrounding the Shooting Incident and Weezer’s Performance at Coachella
Earlier this month, Loudwire reported that the LAPD shot Lauren and subsequently charged her with attempted murder while they were in pursuit of suspects connected to a hit-and-run incident in Los Angeles. This situation arose when the California Highway Patrol requested assistance in locating three misdemeanor hit-and-run suspects who had fled into a residential area near the intersection of 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street.
Upon entering the rear yard of a residence located on the 5300 block of Waldo Palace, officers encountered Lauren, who was armed with a handgun. After she refused to drop the weapon and pointed it at the officers, they shot her in the shoulder, and she was later treated at a nearby medical facility.
On April 10, Lauren was released on a $1 million bond, and the following day, Scott Shriner provided a positive update regarding Lauren’s recovery to the media while walking his dogs. Before heading into his home, he added: “See you at Coachella!”
True to his word, Weezer performed at Coachella on April 12, delivering an impressive 12-song set that featured both chart-topping hits like “Hash Pipe,” “Island in the Sun,” and “Say it Ain’t So” alongside lesser-known tracks such as “Surf Wax America” and “Perfect Situation.” They also delighted fans with a cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” and their decision to proceed with the performance received mixed reactions from the audience.
For example, one user on X commented on Weezer’s post about the festival, expressing excitement while also acknowledging the complexity of the situation: “I’m so thrilled to see y’all again!!! But I also want to say I understand if you all don’t and I hope you know fans would understand why you wouldn’t. Sending all the love.”
Conversely, another user humorously quipped: “When will the new album ‘Bullet Sponge Bitch’ be released?”
Of course, Loudwire will continue to provide updates as this developing story unfolds.
