Stoners have been a reliable source of comedy in movies for decades, whether they’re wandering into ridiculous situations, getting distracted by the smallest things, or somehow finding themselves in the middle of a much bigger adventure than they ever expected. From The Big Lebowski and Friday to Pineapple Express and beyond, Hollywood has given us plenty of memorable characters who are rarely more than a few minutes away from lighting up. There are enough great movie stoners to fill several lists, but we’ve narrowed it down to a dozen of our favorites.

And by the way, we’re ranking the movie characters and character duos, rather than the movies themselves. Here we go:

Smiley Face

#12 – Jane

Anna Faris gives us one of the great solo stoner performances in Gregg Araki’s Smiley Face. Jane is an aspiring actress whose day takes a spectacular turn after she accidentally eats her roommate’s marijuana-laced cupcakes, leaving her to navigate Los Angeles while increasingly, hilariously high. Smiley Face never became as mainstream as The Big Lebowski or Pineapple Express, but Faris’ performance has earned the movie a growing cult reputation, and its female perspective makes it a welcome change from the usual parade of male stoner buddies.

Half Baked

#11 – Thurgood Jenkins

Dave Chappelle’s Thurgood Jenkins is one of the great movie stoners, and Half Baked gives him plenty of opportunities to prove it. When his best friend lands in jail after accidentally killing a diabetic police horse, Thurgood and his friends come up with a ridiculous plan to raise the money for bail by selling weed. Packed with absurd situations, memorable celebrity cameos, and plenty of marijuana-fueled stupidity, Half Baked has become one of the defining stoner comedies of the 1990s. Chappelle is obviously the biggest reason to watch, but Thurgood is the kind of guy who makes getting high look like a full-time job.

#10 – Ted and John

Even if you aren’t a fan of Seth MacFarlane’s brand of comedy, you have to admit that the concept of Ted is pretty funny. The foul-mouthed teddy bear and his best friend John Bennett have been getting high and getting into trouble since the first movie in 2012, with Ted 2 continuing their adventures and the Ted TV series taking them back to John’s high school years. The series has now run for two seasons, giving Ted and John even more opportunities to get into trouble, make terrible decisions, and somehow remain best friends through it all. At this point, it’s hard to think of movie stoners without giving these two a spot on the list.

pineapple express

#9 – Dale and Saul

Pineapple Express derives its title from a strain of pot and follows a process server and his weed dealer as they embark on a comedic and violent odyssey after witnessing a murder. Seth Rogen and James Franco have great chemistry as Dale and Saul, two guys who would probably be perfectly happy sitting around getting high if the entire criminal underworld wasn’t suddenly trying to kill them. The movie is one of the best examples of a stoner comedy colliding with an action movie, and one of the most entertaining films of its kind. I could have easily picked This Is the End or even The Interview, but Pineapple Express remains the more direct stoner showcase of the Rogen/Franco partnership.

Super Troopers

#8 – The Super Troopers

The Vermont State Troopers of Super Troopers aren’t exactly the most by-the-book cops, and that includes their occasional enthusiasm for marijuana. Farva, Thorny, Mac, Rabbit, and Foster spend much of the movie messing with each other, busting stoners, and making plenty of drug-related jokes while trying to expose a group of corrupt cops. The movie isn’t a traditional stoner comedy, but its combination of pot humor, elaborate pranks, and completely immature police work makes the Super Troopers some of the funniest cops to ever get high on screen.

Linklater Dazed and Confused

#7 – The Stoners of Dazed and Confused

It was hard to pick just one character from Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age masterpiece about growing up in Austin, Texas, during the summer of 1976. From Matthew McConaughey’s Wooderson to Rory Cochrane’s Slater and Jason London’s Randall “Pink” Floyd, practically everyone in Dazed and Confused is high at some point and having a great time. Well, Ben Affleck’s douchey Fred O’Bannion may be the exception, but just about everyone else is alright, alright, alright.

Harold & Kumar sequel, Harold & Kumar 4

#6 – Harold and Kumar

While I am not a big fan of this stoner franchise, Harold Lee and Kumar Patel have become synonymous with a new generation of movie potheads. The original Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle sent the pair on a ridiculous quest for burgers, followed by two sequels that took them to even more absurd places. The series is also responsible for one of Neil Patrick Harris’ funniest roles, with the actor playing a wildly fictionalized version of himself. And now Harold and Kumar are heading back to the big screen, with a fourth movie in the works and the original creative team returning. It may take a lot more than weed to get most of us to eat White Castle, but you may have the munchies after watching these guys.

Friday

#5 – Craig and Smokey

Friday is one of those comedies that can be enjoyed whether or not you identify with its particular brand of stoner chaos. Ice Cube’s Craig Jones is just trying to make it through one very long day after getting fired, but his best friend Smokey has smoked up the marijuana he was supposed to sell and owes a dangerous drug dealer $200. From there, the two spend the day dealing with neighborhood bullies, angry parents, relationship problems, and one ridiculous situation after another. Chris Tucker’s performance as Smokey helped launch him toward Hollywood stardom, and while Rush Hour would make him a leading man, Friday remains one of his funniest performances. Thirty years later, the movie’s laid-back humor and endlessly quotable characters have lost very little of their appeal.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

#4 – Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo

Terry Gilliam has given us some mindf*cks over the years, but Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is easily one of his trippiest and most insane. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro bring Hunter S. Thompson’s Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo to life with such commitment that the movie feels less like a traditional road trip and more like a two-hour descent into psychedelic madness. The pair head to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, but their suitcase full of drugs quickly turns the assignment into an unforgettable nightmare. Depp and Del Toro are phenomenal together, making Duke and Gonzo two of the most memorable drug-fueled characters ever put on screen.

Jay and Silent Bob

#3 – Jay and Silent Bob

Jay and Silent Bob started out as a couple of foul-mouthed background characters in Kevin Smith’s Clerks before becoming the signature duo of the View Askewniverse. Jason Mewes’ endlessly energetic Jay and Smith’s not-always-silent Silent Bob have appeared in movies ranging from Mallrats and Chasing Amy to their own Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. They’re ostensibly small-time drug dealers, but their real talent is turning up wherever Kevin Smith’s characters need someone to cause trouble, deliver stoner wisdom or yell something that probably shouldn’t be yelled in public. Together they’re two of the most endearing movie potheads ever created; guys you would definitely want to light one up with.

Cheech and Chong

#2 – Cheech and Chong

The original comedy potheads Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong turned their marijuana-fueled comedy act into a successful run of movies records and live performances. Their first movie,<em Up in Smoke , remains the quintessential Cheech & Chong experience following them as they stumble into one ridiculous situation after another while trying to get their hands on some weed. The movie’s influence on stoner comedy is hard to overstate; even added to National Film Registry in 2024.C & Chong may have inspired generations but their goofy chemistry still holds up; I defy even conservative person not laugh at least once while watching this movie.

The Big Lebowski

#1 – Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski

“Careful man there’s beverage here!” Only Coen Brothers could create film noir crime kidnapping bowling whole lot marijuana something gloriously strange asThe Big Lebowski Jeff Bridges brilliant Jeffrey Lebowski better known Dude perpetually laid-back pot smoker White Russian enthusiast really rather spend days bowling listening Creedence Clearwater Revival What starts case mistaken identity quickly turns bizarre adventures movie history Bridges makes Dude impossible not love One funniest movies all timeThe Big Lebowski remains gold standard for movie stoners.
