Grand Theft Auto Online has been thriving for over 12 years, and the latest announcement confirms that Rockstar is committed to its future. While the online aspect of GTA 6 may eventually overshadow GTA 5, that transition is still some months away.
A significant recent update to GTA Online is the introduction of the Rockstar Mission Creator, enabling players to design their own missions with a specialized toolset. Rockstar has now launched a new content series utilizing the Mission Creator.
This week, the official Rockstar Games website announced Old School Hits, the inaugural entry in a Community Mission Series featuring missions created with the Rockstar Mission Creator. Old School Hits begins on April 30, showcasing missions inspired by the original Grand Theft Auto trilogy.
For a limited time, participating in these missions will yield 4X GTA$ and RP, making it an appealing opportunity even for those without nostalgia for classic GTA titles. Creators can earn even greater rewards, as Rockstar is offering a one-time GTA$10,000,000 bonus to anyone featured in the Community Series. Featured creators will also receive the Rockstar Community Series Varsity Jacket and Mansion Trophy as in-game rewards.
Old School Hits marks just the beginning of the Community Mission Series initiative, with Rockstar encouraging players to anticipate “more community-made Missions to land in the Series later this year.” Anyone wishing to have their content featured in future series should tag their published Missions with “#communityseries”, and Mission prototypes can also be shared on the official Rockstar Games Discord server for feedback from fellow creators.
Instructions on how to start creating missions are available on the Rockstar Games post announcing Old School Hits, with more comprehensive tutorials provided in five official in-game missions.
The new focus on community-created Missions could provide insight into how Rockstar intends to support GTA Online moving forward. While official content updates are likely to continue given GTA Online‘s impressive revenue performance, eventually, attention will need to shift towards the era of GTA 6.
If the community persists in crafting new missions, however, the replayability of GTA Online could remain strong for years. Although Old School Hits may not seem like a significant shift for Grand Theft Auto Online, it represents a subtle beginning of a new chapter for the game.
