Harry Potter Season 2 Recasts Ginny Weasley with Gracie Cochrane

Recasting Ginny Weasley for Season 2 of the Harry Potter TV Show Due to “Unforeseen Circumstances”

The Chamber of Secrets will not open for Gracie Cochrane.

HBO Max’s Harry Potter series is already facing a cast change as it approaches its second season, losing one of its child actors before season one even airs.

Young actress Gracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will not return for season two of the fantasy series, according to a statement from HBO and Gracie’s family obtained by multiple outlets on May 18.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances,” her family told Variety, “Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one.”

However, they emphasized that Gracie—who starred alongside Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), and Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger)—had nothing but positive reflections on her time at Hogwarts.

“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to [casting director] Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience,” the statement continued. “Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
