Jeremy Renner has candidly shared insights regarding the surprising absence of Hawkeye Season 2, clarifying that the delay is not related to any archery skills. During a revealing interview on the High Performance podcast, Renner disclosed that he was indeed approached for a second season of the Disney+ Marvel series, but the financial offer left him in disbelief: “They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money,” Renner stated. “I thought, ‘This is going to require twice the effort for half the pay, and essentially, eight months of my life for a significantly lower salary.’”
The talented actor, who first appeared as Clint Barton in 2011’s Thor and gained further acclaim starring alongside Hailee Steinfeld in the successful 2021 Disney+ series, expressed his disappointment regarding what he perceived as an insulting offer. He speculated that his life-threatening 2023 snowplow accident may have influenced the studio’s decision-making process.
“I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got run over?’” Renner remarked, alluding to the January 1st incident that inflicted severe injuries, including eight broken ribs in 14 places and numerous fractures in his legs, ankles, clavicle, and shoulder.
Understanding Jeremy Renner’s Accident and Its Impact
The Hawkeye star suffered a devastating accident when he was struck by his 14,000-pound Sno-Cat while attempting to assist his nephew amidst heavy snowfall near his residence in Lake Tahoe. His recovery process has been extensive, involving several months of rigorous rehabilitation and physical therapy, which undoubtedly included challenging discussions with the studio regarding his future in the series.
“This is not Marvel, mind you. This is just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite… I mean, just at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it.”
Despite the disagreements and the fallout from this situation, Renner remains open to the possibility of reprising his role as Clint Barton. This leaves the door ajar for a potential return in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, particularly since he did not receive an opportunity to appear in Doomsday.
“Sadly, I still love the character. I’d still love to do it, but I had to defend myself. I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made the first season. So it’s all disheartening that that didn’t happen, but that’s fine. I’m happy to let that go, because my body’s probably thanking me, time and time again, that I’m not doing it right now. But we’ll see.”
Hawkeye is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
