In the ever-evolving world of beauty trends, there’s an infinite array of innovations from skincare hacks to the latest in makeup. With advancements in Botox, fillers, and sculpting techniques, the beauty landscape is constantly shifting. However, what recently captured my attention more than any other trend is the concept of a headspa.
You might be wondering: is a spa dedicated solely to my hair really necessary? At first, I thought so too.
I shared this skepticism before visiting The Sage Headspa in Alpharetta, GA. Compounding my doubts was my experience as a person with a full head of locs. Anyone with curly or kinky hair can relate to the hesitation I felt. Unfortunately, hair types often associated with Black women frequently face exclusion or bias due to persistent misconceptions about their care. Adding locs into the equation can intimidate those who may lack experience with my hair type.
Despite my apprehension, I made the decision to step out of my comfort zone and embrace this unique experience.

To give you some context about my hair, I have fairly mature locs, having started my loc journey in 2021. Currently, I have around 80 locs, which are quite thick and reach waist-length (I stand at 5’2″ for reference).
Discovering the Transformative Benefits of My First Headspa Visit
As I made my way to my appointment, my nerves were palpable. Prior to my visit, I had researched extensively but noticed a lack of representation on the spa’s website; there were no images of anyone who resembled me or had locs. Fortunately, upon my arrival, I quickly realized that the staff was diverse and welcoming.
Marissa, who greeted me at the door, ushered me into the most serene and calming room I’ve ever experienced. She kindly explained the preparation steps for my appointment, which included removing my shirt and any jewelry that might interfere with the treatment.
My anxiety heightened as I considered my hearing challenges; I wear hearing aids and knew I’d have to take them out during the treatment. I was concerned about how I would communicate with the masseuse. When I asked Marissa about this, she reassured me that it was fine to remove them. Throughout the session, she spoke clearly and at an appropriate volume, making sure I could understand her instructions without feeling condescended. It was comforting to know that accommodations were in place for guests with disabilities.
After explaining the process, Marissa stepped out to allow me to prepare and put on the towel provided. I then settled into what can only be described as the most comfortable bed I’ve ever laid on—one that was even heated for added relaxation!

Once I was comfortably settled, Marissa knocked and entered the room. She checked in to see if I was comfortable and informed me about the detox treatment she would be performing on my locs. I was genuinely excited, as I hadn’t detoxed my locs in nearly two years, making this experience long overdue. Additionally, having recently dyed my hair, my locs were definitely in need of some extra TLC.
The atmosphere transformed as the lights dimmed, and several diffusers filled the room with calming scents. Soft music played in the background, enhancing the soothing ambiance. The combination of these elements helped to ease my nerves, allowing me to relax and let Marissa work her magic.
The detox treatment itself felt akin to an elevated shampoo experience one would receive at a salon—my favorite part of any salon visit. However, this headspa experience was even more tranquil and focused. Instead of merely washing and conditioning my hair, Marissa directed her attention specifically to my scalp, providing not just a good scratch but a thorough stimulation that invigorated my entire head.
While I wasn’t privy to the exact steps or products used during the treatment, I found myself completely unwinding in the moment. There were several instances when I nearly drifted off to sleep! As if a scalp massage and loc detox weren’t enough, Marissa also treated me to a much-needed shoulder massage that enhanced the overall experience.
After rinsing my hair, I felt a tinge of anxiety again, as drying locs is a different process compared to drying loose hair. However, Marissa expertly wrapped my locs tightly and allowed me to get dressed while still having the towel on my head. She offered me water and kindly escorted me to the door when my appointment concluded.

As I walked to my car, I couldn’t help but think, “I absolutely need to experience that again.”
