Hirata Runa, 8-Year-Old Japanese Pop Star, Passes Away

Hirata Runa’s family is facing a tragic loss.

The pop star—who was a trainee member of the Japanese girls’ idol group DIANNA Project—passed away due to myocarditis, a heart condition caused by influenza, as confirmed by her talent agency on Sept. 28. She was only 8 years old.

In a translated statement shared online, her agency expressed that Runa “has passed away due to myocarditis resulting from influenza,” and added, “We extend our deepest gratitude to all the fans who have supported Hirata Runa and to all those involved who have provided assistance.”

Myocarditis is characterized by inflammation of the myocardium, the muscle responsible for heart contractions, which can diminish the heart’s ability to pump blood throughout the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The statement further requested, “Out of respect for the feelings of the bereaved family, we kindly ask that you refrain from making individual inquiries, interviews, or asking questions on social media regarding this matter.”

Just five days prior to her death, Runa had performed at a concert on Sept. 20, as reported by the Chinese outlet The Standard.
