My journey as a plus size designer was largely influenced by the noticeable absence of Black plus size designers in the fashion industry. Shopping often felt like an exercise in exclusion and lack of appreciation, as there were simply not enough designers, models, or representation that resonated with my identity as a Black woman.
The fashion landscape has dramatically evolved over the years. Today, we proudly grace the covers of major magazines and are featured in prominent television shows, establishing our presence in the industry. We are not just participants; we are the driving force behind the fashion narrative!
It is crucial that we recognize and uplift Black plus size designers who are actively reshaping the fashion landscape. These visionary creators have bravely challenged conventional standards, offering us the stylish options that have long been missing and redefining the essence of plus size fashion.
But that?s not all!
It’s essential to acknowledge that the expansion of plus size fashion has significantly been propelled by the efforts of Black women.
With Black History Month upon us, we felt compelled to curate a dedicated list for you! Innovation, creativity, and inspiration have traditionally stemmed from independent designers within the plus size community!
We have compiled a list of over 40 indie Black plus size designers and inclusive fashion lines (note: this list excludes retailers, brands, and boutique owners, which will be addressed in a future article) that deserve our unwavering support!
