Instant Spark Found by Slash and His Band

Slash has surpassed the 15-year milestone and is looking towards a 20-year celebration of the strong partnership and friendship he has built with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators.

They are preparing for an exciting 2027 that will include extensive touring both domestically and internationally (see the dates below) — along with a new album, Flying Blind, set to release on Feb. 26.

As the legendary guitarist from Guns N' Roses shares, his current situation came together surprisingly smoothly.

“It just started out that way. I was reflecting on this recently because we’ve been together for about 16 years now,” he explains. “It began with just Myles. [We] had an instant spark on that first solo record that I did.”

How Did He Assemble His Band?

While preparing to release 2010’s Slash, he found that Kennedy was the perfect vocal match for the wide range of material featured on the album, which included several guest artists. He then needed to complete the rest of the band.

“I was searching for drummers, and I know all the drummers in L.A., but somehow I heard about a guy named Brent Fitz, whom I had never encountered before,” he recalls. “He lived in Vegas, so I connected with him. He came out to L.A., we jammed, and he turned out to be the perfect drummer.”

Interestingly, Fitz also helped Slash fill the bass player position. “Brent said, ‘I know a bass player.’ I replied, ‘Everyone knows a bass player.’ He insisted, ‘No, I know a really talented guy in Vegas named Todd Kerns.’ Todd flew out and was incredible. He knew exactly what to do. We had natural chemistry from the start and began touring.”

‘We Just Keep Going Because it Feels Good’

After spending time on tour, he realized he had found a group of musicians he could collaborate with for future albums and tours.

“Essentially, we had so much fun during the tour, and I felt very comfortable because I’m a spontaneous live performer,” he notes. “We had natural cohesion, so I thought it made sense to record with these guys, leading to Apocalyptic Love. We share an easy and symbiotic musical relationship. We just keep going because it feels good.”

To Be Frank About It…

Guitarist Frank Sidoris, known for his work with Wolfgang Van Halen and Mammoth, was the final addition to the Conspirators in 2012.

“We had a revolving door of guitar players auditioning [for a] for a couple of days in L.A., then Frank came in,” he remembers, though the details are somewhat unclear. “I believe Brent and Todd knew Frank already, or maybe I had met him before. He came in — and you can tell by ear. You don’t know until you hear it, but when I did, it just clicked.”

Next Up: Aerosmith

This week, Slash will return to the stage with Guns N’ Roses as part of the massive California Dream On concerts featuring Aerosmith, which kick off Thursday (Oct. 29) at the Hollywood Bowl. It’s a reunion with one of his all-time favorite bands that he’s eagerly anticipating.

“Aerosmith is one of my all-time favorite rock bands and has greatly influenced me,” he tells UCR. “[It] played a crucial role in my decision to pick up the guitar in the first place.”
