Invincible Season 5 Photo Confirms Aaron Paul’s Comeback

Aaron Paul might be returning as Powerplex.

A new behind-the-scenes photo from Invincible season 5 has seemingly confirmed Paul’s return to the superhero TV show despite an initial “grueling” exit. Paul joined the cast of Invincible season 3 as Powerplex, an electricity-wielding villain who blamed Invincible for the deaths of his sister and niece during the Destruction of Chicago. Their confrontation eventually led to Powerplex accidentally killing his own wife and son, but still aiming blame at the protagonist. In November 2025, it was reported Paul would not be coming back to voice him in subsequent seasons due to how “grueling” his tragic story was for him.

Now, Paul has taken to his Instagram story, seemingly confirming that he will be returning as Powerplex in Invincible season 5. In his story, Paul posts an image of an Invincible episode script on a table, captioning it with “some light reading.” It appears to be confirmation that his time as Powerplex is not yet over, and that he’ll be coming back in season 5. This seems to confirm that, despite his initial misgivings about returning to the show, he’s prepared to continue the recurring antagonist’s story.

Check out what Paul posted below:

While Paul declined to return as Powerplex in Invincible season 4, it seems like he’s on board to come back for the upcoming batch of episodes. In March 2026, series creator Robert Kirkman confirmed scheduling conflicts were another core reason he didn’t come back as well. The creator had explained how, given Paul’s busy schedule, it’s not easy to work around having him come into the studio to record a small number of lines, especially since Powerplex is only a recurring villain.

Luckily, it seems Paul will be portraying him into the foreseeable future, returning for Invincible season 5 to continue his story. Paul teasing his return as Powerplex comes off the heels of him joining Fallout season 3, the two roles both for upcoming Prime Video streaming TV shows. Powerplex has a lengthy history in the Invincible comics that will make his return important for the larger narrative. While it’s unclear how the show will approach his next storyline, the show’s current progress indicates season 5 will be a major point for his character.

Paul’s return will help to keep Powerplex’s voice consistent, though the show is no stranger to recasting actors as well. Titan was originally voiced by Mahershala Ali in season 1 before he was replaced by Todd Williams in subsequent appearances. Likewise, Mark’s friend William was originally voiced by Andrew Rannells before Brandon Scott Jones took over the role in season 4. But for Paul, it seems his connection to Powerplex means he’ll be coming back to continue his emotionally complex story.

Invincible season 5 is expected to arrive in 2027, focusing on the aftermath of the Viltrumite War and subsequent threats to Earth that are going to crop up. Powerplex will inevitably be involved in what’s next, continuing to develop his story with the core protagonist as his grief and need for revenge continue to weigh on him.
