After dedicating 18 transformative months to serving in the South Korean military, J-Hope has expressed that his experience has profoundly changed him, making him a new person now that he has returned to civilian life. This period of service has not only shaped his character but also deepened his understanding of his identity and values as a South Korean citizen.
In an insightful interview with Apple Music 1 host Zane Lowe, the renowned BTS member shared candid reflections about his life during military service, culminating in his discharge in October. J-Hope stands out as only the second member of the globally acclaimed boy band to complete his enlistment, following Jin; fellow members RM, Suga, V, Jimin, and Jung Kook are expected to return from military duties in June.
“I believe it’s a natural duty for young individuals in South Korea to undertake this responsibility,” shared the artist behind the hit “Chicken Noodle Soup.” He emphasized, “This chapter was incredibly significant for both J-Hope and Jung Ho-seok. My pride in being a South Korean citizen runs deep, and I hold many cherished values of this country close to my heart.”
“It was indeed a unique experience,” J-Hope continued. “Throughout this journey, I encountered a diverse array of people and absorbed a wealth of positive energy. I also learned many valuable lessons. However, spending a year and a half away from my usual life was not trivial; it stirred many emotions within me. Ultimately, I came to realize how profoundly impactful the work I have pursued over the years truly is and how much it means to me.”
Despite being in military service, J-Hope mentioned that he continued to nurture his passion for music, stating, “Even though I was serving my country, a part of me always held on to my love for music, which never faded.” His commitment to his art showcases his dedication and passion, even amidst his duties.
The collective military service of the BTS members has resulted in a break for the group lasting nearly two years, with their last album, Be, reaching the pinnacle of the Billboard 200 chart in 2020. Throughout this hiatus, like Jimin, all the other members of the Bangtan Boys have also engaged in various solo projects, showcasing their individual artistry and creativity.
However, this break is nearing its end, as J-Hope hinted during his conversation with Apple Music 1 that he and his fellow BTS members are eager to reunite. “We will gather soon to discuss our future plans as BTS,” he shared with Lowe. “I believe it’s going to generate an incredible amount of energy.”
