Have you ever wondered what paths James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo might have taken if Metallica had never come into existence? This intriguing question was recently explored during an episode of The Metallica Report podcast, where the two iconic musicians shared their thoughts.
Interestingly, both Hetfield and Trujillo initially hinted at staying connected to the music industry in some capacity. However, they also revealed alternative career choices that they might have pursued had they not reached the remarkable success they enjoy today. So, what could have been the fate of James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo without the legendary Metallica?
Exploring Alternative Careers: From Music to Construction
Trujillo shared his thoughts candidly, stating, “I would probably continue to play music.” He expressed his passion for songwriting, noting, “I love songwriting. I always write songs just for fun.” He mused that he might have become an independent songwriter and ventured into music production. However, acknowledging the podcast’s intent for a non-musical response, he revealed, “The other thing that I actually originally started to do … my first job was in construction.” He reminisced about his early days and considered the possibility of becoming a general contractor, leveraging his organizational and coordinating skills. “I can’t lift heavy things anymore,” Trujillo humorously added, “but back in the day, I could handle a couple of sheets of drywall, no problem, up three flights of stairs. I worked in drywall and hardwood flooring for quite some time.”
He further elaborated on how his early experiences in construction have proved beneficial in his current life. “Learning that stuff was great because now if I see a fixer-upper property or a house, I’m not intimidated. I can see the potential because I’ve done that on my own,” Trujillo explained. “So I’m not afraid to remodel or rebuild. I could easily be a contractor, something in the trades—a tradesman of sorts.”
James Hetfield’s Alternative Aspirations Beyond Metallica
Similar to Trujillo, James Hetfield expressed that he would likely still find a way to remain involved in music had Metallica never formed. He humorously remarked, “I’d be trying to form Metallica … still. I’d probably be still looking for a Lars Ulrich out there,” referencing his iconic bandmate. “Or I’d probably be really involved in bands. I’d be roadie-ing or working in a studio and helping make music somehow.”
When discussing potential careers outside of music, Hetfield mentioned his love for graphic design. “I love graphics, I love artwork, and I also enjoy working with my hands,” he said. “I have a passion for tradesmanship with wood and metal, which could have evolved into a fulfilling career as well.” Interestingly, Hetfield’s interest in the trades has not only been a personal passion, but it has also benefitted others; Metallica has funded scholarships aimed at helping aspiring tradespeople achieve their career goals.
Despite his varied interests, Hetfield candidly revealed that none of these pursuits could overshadow his true passion. “Music is the gift I’ve been given,” he stated. “So I’d still be trying to kick some doors down and get into it somehow,” he emphasized, showcasing his unwavering devotion to his craft.
The Future of Metallica: Where Are They Headed in 2025?
