John Solberg, the esteemed head of communications at FX and a key architect behind the transformation of what was once a fledgling cable network into a formidable powerhouse renowned for its critically acclaimed and Award-winning series, has announced his decision to retire. In a heartfelt memo to all staff on Wednesday, Solberg disclosed that he would be departing from FX when his current contract concludes in January. This marks the end of an era filled with significant achievements and milestones in the realm of television.
Solberg’s journey with FX began over 28 years ago, during a time when the network was primarily recognized for airing reruns of popular primetime shows like The X-Files. He joined the team in March 1997 as the Director of Media Relations, progressing through the ranks to hold prestigious positions such as Vice President, Senior Vice President, and ultimately, Executive Vice President of Publicity. His journey reflects a dedication to fostering a vibrant entertainment culture that resonates with audiences across the globe.
During his tenure, Solberg played a pivotal role in FX’s foray into the realm of premium scripted programming. He was instrumental in the successful launch of the groundbreaking series The Shield, which not only captivated audiences but also earned Michael Chiklis an Emmy Award in 2002. This milestone represented a significant moment in television history, as it marked the first time an actor received an Emmy for a performance on a basic cable channel. Chiklis made headlines during his acceptance speech, expressing his gratitude and famously shouting out “SOLBERG!!” to honor his friend and colleague.
As FX continued to evolve, the name Solberg became a familiar presence in the acceptance speeches at the Emmy Awards, reflecting the network’s consistent impact on popular culture and critical acclaim. Most recently, FX’s miniseries Shogun achieved considerable success, winning nearly every award for which it was nominated, further solidifying FX’s reputation in the competitive television landscape.
Last year’s Emmy Awards were another crowning achievement for Solberg, as FX proudly claimed the title for the most wins by a network at the event. This remarkable success was largely attributed to the outstanding performances of Shogun and The Bear, culminating in an impressive total of 36 wins. Notably, Shogun secured 18 awards while The Bear followed closely with 11 wins, marking a historic moment as this was the first time in over 15 years that the top winner of the evening was not Netflix or HBO. Solberg again received heartfelt acknowledgments during the ceremony.
“Since FX launched our original programming model more than two decades ago, our creative partners and shows have benefitted immensely from the unwavering support of John Solberg,” expressed FX Chairman John Landgraf. “Much of FX’s positive relationship with the press can be traced back to John’s honesty, his genuine passion for storytelling, and his profound respect for journalism as a profession. After collaborating for 21 years, I will deeply miss John’s daily presence at FX, but he will always remain a dear friend.”
Solberg is cherished by FX employees, and his reputation among FX writers, producers, and stars is even more profound. Last year, Solberg faced the heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife, Maeve. During her memorial service, numerous FX talents, both past and present, gathered to pay their respects and support their dear friend, showcasing the close-knit community that has flourished under his leadership.
Here’s the heartfelt message that Solberg shared with the company today:
NOTE FROM JOHN SOLBERG
Dear FX Family,
I am officially stepping down from my role as EVP of Publicity when my contract concludes in January.
Working at FX over these past 28+ years has been nothing short of a magical experience. During my time here, I’ve had the privilege of working under four remarkable leaders: Ellen Cooper, who hired me; Mark Sonnenberg; Peter Liguori, whose visionary leadership has forever altered the trajectory of FX; and my current boss for the past 21 years, John Landgraf, who is truly unmatched in his expertise.
I have had the absolute best job anyone could ever dream of. This position is special—the people are exceptional, the culture is inspiring, and the shows are unparalleled. For me, FX stands alone in the industry.
We can only be as good as our shows. I have been fortunate to work on some of the most acclaimed, groundbreaking, and culture-defining programs in television history. I was granted the opportunity to be an evangelist for countless talented producers, writers, actors, directors, and artisans, many of whom have become lifelong friends. It has been an honor to work alongside them.
I am also deeply thankful to the journalists and critics I have collaborated with over the years, as well as for their coverage of FX and our shows. While we may not always align on every opinion they express—and often we do—these individuals serve as vital, independent arbiters of our performance, and their assessments are important.
This brings me back to my current position. We have the finest leaders anywhere, and John is truly one of a kind. It is both inspiring and motivating to work with someone at the top who demands more from himself than anyone else in the organization. I cannot imagine anyone at his level who cares more or has a better relationship with his colleagues, regardless of their title. He is simply the best. I am incredibly grateful for his partnership and friendship.
Nick and Gina as Presidents of Entertainment, and Steph as the Chief Marketing Officer are second to none. The intellectual and creative talent possessed by each division leader leaves me in awe every single day—Kate, Jonathan, Katcher, Chuck, Kelly, Karen, Julie P., Kim, Nick, Sally, Ethan, Steve, Lance, Kenna, Kenya, Michael, Jason, and Shola. I have every confidence that you and your teams will continue to produce extraordinary work, ensuring that FX remains a standard bearer for excellence in this industry.
To my incredible team—Lauren, Roslyn, Lana, Susan, Adriana, Alana, Amanda, Jesse, John, and the entire team—you are the most exceptionally talented individuals in public relations, trade communications, image publicity, talent relations, events, and awards teams on the planet. You elevate everything you touch. I have been a fortunate beneficiary of your immense talents, and I am incredibly grateful to you all.
Lastly, I could not have accomplished this role without the unwavering love and encouragement from my sons Owen, Thomas, and Nick, my daughter-in-law Annie, and most importantly, my wife, Maeve. As a communications executive, being married to a talented news producer and writer was a professional advantage that enabled me to excel in my job. She was by my side throughout this journey and consistently provided invaluable counsel. Life isn’t the same without her.
The compassion and support you have shown my family over the past six years have meant more than you could ever know. It speaks to the very essence of who you are. The same gratitude extends to my colleagues at Disney, especially Bob and Dana, Eric, who has been like a brother to me for the past 25 years, and many others including Joe, Debra, Sonia, Shannon, Naomi, Candice, Kristina, Paul, Michelle, Barrie, Lacey, and so many others. That compassion and support exemplify the caliber of this company and its people.
While this has been a challenging decision, I believe the time is right for me to step away. FX will always hold a special place in my heart. I am grateful to each and every one of you.
Stay Fearless.
Godspeed,
John
