Kandahar: Gerard Butler’s Action Movie Gets Major Streaming Update

Gerard Butler is renowned for his iconic roles in 300 and Olympus Has Fallen. However, several years ago, he collaborated with a Clayface star for an intriguing conspiracy thriller that has recently received a significant update for streaming platforms. In the 2023 action-packed film Kandahar, Butler stars alongside Tom Rhys Harries and Farhad Bagheri. This gripping narrative follows a CIA operative and his translator as they attempt to escape from special forces in Afghanistan after uncovering a covert mission that could jeopardize their lives. Previously, Kandahar was exclusively available for free on Pluto TV and Tubi, but as of August 8, the film can now be streamed on Netflix. While it garnered a disappointing 45% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it achieved a commendable 82% audience score on the Popcornmeter. The film’s box office earnings were under $10 million, though its production budget remains undisclosed.

Mitchell LaFortune penned the screenplay for Kandahar, with Ric Roman Waugh taking the helm as director. LaFortune is also set to write the script for Butler’s upcoming film, Greenland: Migration, a sequel to his action-packed adventure that is scheduled for theatrical release on January 6, 2026. Waugh, who also directed the original Greenland, continues his collaboration with Butler, having previously directed him in Angel Has Fallen. Since the release of Kandahar, Butler has only headlined two live-action feature films in 2023. He commenced the year with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, a sequel to the successful 2018 action thriller, which is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Furthermore, Butler reprises his role as Stoick in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, which is available for rent or purchase on Prime Video and is still showing in theaters.
