Kenny Hickey (Silvertomb, Type O Negative) reflects on his childhood and the albums that shaped his teenage years.
Born on May 22, 1966, Hickey’s formative years spanned from 1979 to 1985, a crucial period for rock and heavy metal, where any young, aspiring musician would spend countless hours by the turntable, trying to master their favorite songs.
While Hickey was captivated by the rising traditional heavy metal scene, a diverse array of ’70s rock also influenced his early musical passion. He even recalls a particular pianist’s platform boots featured on an album cover.
Since then, he has enjoyed a successful music career, notably two remarkable decades with Type O Negative. Now, he returns with The Interpretations of Nightmares, the first new album from Silvertomb since their 2019 debut Edge of Existence.

“Just as things were really beginning to take off for Silvertomb, our hands were suddenly tied for several years due to the pandemic and its long-lasting effects. Additionally, I had a drinking problem that needed urgent attention,” Hickey recalls about the period between 2020 and 2024.
Having taken care of himself, he has now reconnected with his Silvertomb bandmates Johnny Kelly (drums – Danzig, Type O Negative, Quiet Riot), Hank Hell (bass – Inhuman), Joseph James (guitar – Inhuman, ex-Agnostic Front), and Aaron Joos (guitar, keyboards).

The Interpretations of Nightmares is filled with heavy, lumbering riffs that blend doom, sludge, and a touch of classic metal as Hickey showcases his passionate vocals in an incredibly visceral manner.
The album releases on Nov. 13 via Steamhammer (pre-order below).
