Long Sets and the Misunderstanding of Real Rock Shows

Jack White has taken to social media to engage with fans expressing their desire for longer concert performances. He acknowledged the ongoing discussions about the expected duration of his shows, stating, ?Been hearing a lot of chatter throughout the year of this glorious electric touring about how long our sets are ?supposed to be? on stage.? The rocker emphasized that the quality of a live performance should not be measured by its length. In today’s culture, many fans boast about artists who play for extended periods, yet White clarified that his aim is not to conform to such expectations.

He further elaborated that some of the most iconic acts in rock history, such as The Beatles and Ramones, were known for their shorter sets, which did not diminish their legendary status. ?The Beatles and Ramones played 30 minute (ish) sets,? White remarked, expressing a preference for such concise performances. He believes that the perception of ticket prices entitling fans to lengthy shows has led to unrealistic expectations, which he does not intend to fulfill during his performances.

Continuing his discourse on the topic of performance length, White suggested that the request for marathon shows may reflect a misunderstanding of true rock ethos. He stated, ?I?m not sure y?all are knowing (or maybe remembering?) what a real rock or punk show is like.? He contrasted traditional rock concerts with modern arena spectacles filled with elaborate production, such as laser light shows and pre-recorded visuals. White expressed that he has experienced numerous rock shows lasting around 45 minutes that left him deeply inspired and fulfilled. His philosophy focuses on leaving the audience exhilarated and eager for more without the need for excessively long performances.

White concluded his message by assuring fans that his perspective comes from a genuine place, aiming to foster open dialogue rather than expressing resentment. ?Love to all of our fans, I see your faces every night and you can be assured I?ve never phoned it in in my life,? he wrote. He emphasized that whether a set lasts 20 minutes or 2 hours, he is committed to delivering an experience that resonates with the atmosphere and energy of the room. The length of the performance does not necessarily correlate with the intensity of the experience, as louder cheers do not dictate an extended show.
