Maynard James Keenan, the iconic frontman of Tool, is currently in a period of deep mourning following the passing of his father, Mike Keenan, who passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, February 7. This loss has profoundly impacted not only Maynard but also the entire music community that admired Mike for his rich and vibrant life.
On Saturday, Maynard took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute honoring his father?s memory. His post included a collection of cherished photographs alongside a poignant and detailed caption that reflected on the life and character of Mike. This tribute served as a powerful reminder of their close bond and the lasting influence Mike had on Maynard’s life.
In his tribute, Maynard shared, “My Father, Mike Keenan, also my wrestling coach and high school teacher, passed early yesterday. He went peacefully in his room. And for those of you who knew him, that sounds quite boring. He lived an interesting life. He was recently described as ‘Wild and Ungovernable’.” This description encapsulates the essence of a man who was not only a father but also a mentor and a guiding force in Maynard’s formative years.
Maynard recounted a remarkable incident from over a year ago when his father was struck by a train in Scottville while returning home from a pow wow. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Mike refused medical treatment, fearing it would prevent him from participating in competitive skiing in Helsinki just days later, even with broken ribs. “Totaled the truck. MY truck, btw. Hit by the train that only comes through Scottville once a month. This was my father. And he will be missed,” Maynard expressed, showcasing the resilience and spirit that defined Mike’s life.

Following his initial post, Maynard shared additional thoughts for those wishing to honor his father’s memory with flowers. He expressed his father’s skepticism about such gestures, stating, “Those looking to send flowers or thoughts or prayers, things my father would view as all equally useless, instead please make a donation in his name to the Arizona Raptor Center or the Sedona Wolf Sanctuary… Thank you.” This request reinforces Mike’s values and the causes he cared about, encouraging others to contribute to meaningful organizations in his honor.
During this difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to Maynard James Keenan and his family as they navigate this profound loss and celebrate the legacy of a remarkable man.
