Indeed, Meredith convinces Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to disregard her IRB ban from surgery in order to operate on Nick, as he is the only one she trusts.
Once Nick successfully emerges from surgery, Meredith does something she previously claimed she’d never do.
“Marry me,” she asked Nick, to which he humorously replied, “How badly was I hurt?”
Meredith responded, “About enough to think about all the people that I’ve lost, and I really don’t want to lose you.”
As she expressed, “It turns out, not being married to you has not protected me from anything and I love you and I love our life together and I don’t want my fear to interfere with that anymore.”
While Meredith acknowledged that she does not desire a traditional wedding, Nick immediately accepted her proposal.
“Are you kidding me?” Nick asked her, referencing the surgery Meredith performed back in season 14, “I’ve wanted to marry you since the last time I was in this bed.”
This moment is particularly poignant, as Nick has hinted at wanting to marry Meredith for several seasons—while Meredith has chosen to prioritize her independence, career, and children.
