“You cannot discuss Black dandyism, Black art, or the rich aesthetic traditions of Black culture without acknowledging the profound influence of the Black women who have shaped, nurtured, and redefined these narratives. My intention this year was to elevate and surround myself with remarkable Black women whose brilliance inspires me—these artists, thinkers, and visionaries carry the weight of history and the promise of future possibilities in all that they create,” Lewis articulated passionately.

“It’s challenging to articulate the significance of co-chairing this year’s Met Gala. The theme encapsulates elements of royalty, spirituality, and the sacred power of adornment. Materials such as ivory and cowrie shells are not merely aesthetically pleasing—they embody ancestral memories and serve as markers of identity, protection, and reverence,” Lewis shared on his social media platforms regarding this year’s gala.
“I am profoundly grateful to the Costume Institute at The Met, to Grace Wales Bonner, and to the incredible co-chairs, as well as to everyone who continues to honor the legacy of the Black Dandy.
