David Draiman of Disturbed shared his views with Billy Corgan regarding the intersection of music and politics.
Draiman was a recent guest on Corgan’s The Magnificent Others podcast, released earlier today (April 15). During their hour-and-a-half conversation, they explored the political engagement of artists, with Corgan asking Draiman if music and political themes should coexist.
“I believe musicians should express their true feelings regardless of the topic,” Draiman stated.
“The tradition of protest music is long-standing. There’s no reason art can’t be combined with powerful messages — in fact, it absolutely should be.”
Corgan noted the political nature of music in the 1960s and compared it to the present, suggesting that many artists might hesitate to make political statements for fear of alienating their audience and facing consequences.
Draiman concurred, adding, “It’s not bravery; it’s cowardice. You’re merely speaking to an echo chamber… What purpose does it serve other than self-congratulation?”
The Disturbed frontman addressed significant issues in the U.S., particularly social unrest linked to the increased presence of ICE agents in cities. He expressed a balanced view, supporting law enforcement while advocating for a more efficient citizenship process in the U.S.
Corgan acknowledged the absence of efforts to establish “pathways to citizenship” that could alleviate ongoing tensions, a sentiment Draiman supported.

“I wish people would focus more on solutions rather than using every issue as a partisan weapon against the other side, which is what I frequently observe,” Draiman asserted.
“I believe individuals create division for personal gain and continue to do so, empowering and enriching themselves.”
