Mutants Officially Join Marvel’s Phase 6 Sacred Timeline

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse continues to expand, and after confirming Fox’s X-Men characters as part of it, Phase 6 is officially making mutants part of the sacred timeline. After many rumors and teases that began all the way back with Doctor Strange, the MCU multiverse was finally confirmed in Avengers: Endgame through the creation of other timelines through time travel. However, it wasn’t properly explored until Spider-Man: No Way Home and the TV show Loki.

No Way Home confirmed that the worlds of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man are part of the MCU multiverse, but mutants took a bit longer to be confirmed. It wasn’t until Ms. Marvel that mutants were officially confirmed in the MCU, followed by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (with Namor) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which brought an alternate version of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

Fox’s X-Men are now confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday, but before that, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will bring yet another mutant. While Ms. Marvel and Namor are part of the MCU’s sacred timeline, their mutant nature was used more as an Easter egg and hasn’t been explored, but it all points to Brand New Day officially making mutants part of the MCU’s sacred timeline with the introduction of Jean Grey.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Trailer Keeps Teasing Jean Grey’s Appearance

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man is finally returning in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Brand New Day takes place after the events of No Way Home, which saw Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) casting a spell that made everyone forget Peter Parker. Now, four years later, Spider-Man continues protecting the city, while Peter grieves for his old life and friends.

Brand New Day will see Spider-Man investigating a new, mysterious, powerful threat while trying to understand the surprising and possibly dangerous changes he’s going through. Among the actors joining the MCU in Brand New Day is Sadie Sink, whose role in the movie is still unconfirmed. However, rumors about Sink playing Jean Grey have been floating around since her casting was announced, and have gained force with every trailer, despite none of them showing her face.

However, even if just from behind and without wearing a distinctive suit, all clues point to Sink’s mysterious character being Jean Grey, especially the powers she has displayed in the trailers. The mysterious threat Spider-Man is facing has the powers of psychic manipulation and telepathy, which fit with Grey’s abilities. On top of that, Brand New Day has an X-Men antagonist in Tramell Tillman’s Bill Metzger, who, in the comics, is the leader of the Anti-Mutant Militia.

In Brand New Day, however, Metzger seems to be leading the Department of Damage Control, and he describes Grey as a “threat we can’t control” or see, with Spider-Man being the only one immune to it. By introducing Jean Grey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day would officially be bringing mutants into the sacred timeline, making it easier for others, like Ms. Marvel and Namor, to be properly explored and developed.

It Makes Sense For Spider-Man: Brand New Day To Bring Mutants To The Sacred Timeline

While mutants could pretty much be included in any MCU movie now thanks to the multiverse, it makes sense that their presence in the sacred timeline will be made official in the fourth Spider-Man movie. As mentioned above, it was No Way Home that helped confirm the multiverse, and it was the first MCU movie to bring characters from different universes together thanks to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man.

Brand New Day is also the last movie before the next big MCU crossover event, Avengers: Doomsday, which is bringing together classic Avengers, New Avengers, other already established superheroes, Fox’s X-Men, and more to face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Although Spider-Man’s presence in Doomsday hasn’t been confirmed, Brand New Day is the best chance to bring mutants to the sacred timeline as Doomsday is about to bring mutants from other timelines into the mix.

Mutants might be key to defeating Doctor Doom and to the upcoming threats and conflicts in Avengers: Secret Wars, so it’s wise for the MCU to finally establish them in the sacred timeline before the massive crossovers. Of course, there’s still the possibility that Marvel has been misleading the audience and Sadie Sink will play a different character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but so far, it all points to Jean Grey.
