Understanding My Chemical Romance’s New T-Shirt

On Thursday (March 28), the iconic emo band introduced two new shirts in its online merchandise store. Fans can choose between a short- or long-sleeve shirt featuring the word “phantom” on the front.

The back of the shirt showcases a message written in Keposhka, a fictional language/lettering system created specifically for My Chemical Romance’s “Long Live”: The Black Parade North American Tour that began in 2025.

The band’s name is not included on the shirt.

“Phantom” has emerged multiple times in My Chemical Romance lore in recent months. In January, a brief video clip featuring the word was shared on MCR’s social media ahead of their first show of the Latin America tour. “Phantom” was later displayed on the video screen behind the band during one of their performances.

No further context was provided regarding the significance of “phantom.”

Fans Observe Similarities to Cult ‘Phantom’ Film

A potential inspiration for the shirt is the campy 1974 comedic/horror rock opera film, Phantom of the Paradise. The plot is complex, but it revolves around a musician who adopts a dark new identity after being wronged by the music industry. He terrorizes a concert hall where he desires his music to be performed.

The film contains blood, humorous moments, and numerous “what am I watching?” scenes, similar to My Chemical Romance’s current theatrical presentation celebrating their 2006 album The Black Parade.

Some MCR fans have even noted shot-by-shot tributes to Phantom of the Paradise during the band’s tour.

Loose parallels can also be drawn between songs from Phantom of the Paradise and My Chemical Romance’s lyrics.

In the song “Sleep,” which is the 10th track on The Black Parade, Gerard Way sings “… for the good guys and the bad guys/for the monsters that I’ve been.” In the film, during “Phantom’s Theme,” lyrics state “all the good guys and the bad guys that I’ve been/all the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow“.

The phrases are not identical, but there is likely a connection.

Messages written in Keposhka have been featured throughout My Chemical Romance’s live performances since their tour began in 2025. This alphabet appears on everything from audience messages to tags inside merchandise sold at venues.

Sufficient time has passed for Keposhka decoders to surface online as tools for translating these messages.

According to several decoders, the message on the back of My Chemical Romance’s new “phantom” shirt translates to “a game you will play.”

Mystery Gift for Fans

Fans who have ordered the shirt noticed an automatically added “mystery gift” in their cart while shopping at My Chemical Romance’s official online store. The exact nature of this gift remains unclear.

This intricate world-building and secretive messaging have led at least one person on the My Chemical Romance subreddit to suggest that the band should sell branded “tinfoil hats” as a nod to fans attempting to decipher what is happening.

My Chemical Romance is scheduled to perform at the Welcome to Rockville Festival in Daytona Beach, Florida, on May 10. They will follow this with another festival, Sonic Temple, in Columbus, Ohio, on May 14.
