The film is adapted from Christine Leunens’ 2004 book, Caging Skies. Directed and written by Taika Waititi, he conceived the idea for the film in 2010 after his mother introduced him to Leunens’ book (via Vanity Fair).
The narrative follows Jojo, a young German boy growing up in Nazi Germany during World War II. He idolizes Adolf Hitler and even imagines him as a friend. Jojo’s beliefs are put to the test when he discovers that his mother, Rosie, is hiding a Jewish girl named Elsa in their home. This leads to an unexpected friendship between the two.
In Jojo Rabbit, Scarlett Johansson plays Rosie, with Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo, Thomasin McKenzie as Elsa, Sam Rockwell as Captain Klenzendorf, Rebel Wilson as Fräulein Rahm, Alfie Allen as Finkel, and Waititi portraying Adolf Hitler.
Fox Searchlight Pictures managed the film’s distribution and premiered it at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival. The film was released worldwide on October 18, 2019, achieving significant critical and commercial success.
At the box office, it grossed $90 million against a modest budget of $14 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive 81% Tomatometer score and a 94% audience score. Additionally, it holds a weighted average user score of 7.9 on Metacritic.
The following year, Jojo Rabbit received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Scarlett Johansson. It won one award: Best Adapted Screenplay for Waititi.
