World Book Day has come and gone in 2026, but there’s never a bad time to embrace the power of reading for entertainment. Part of the holiday’s goal is to celebrate literature’s ability to introduce readers of all generations to remarkable stories, both classic and contemporary, and to bring together different cultures through the sharing of those stories. That has also been a goal for PBS and, more specifically, its Masterpiece broadcasts. Since 1971, the banner has been the home for U.S. viewers to catch some of the best of British television, as well as adaptations of timeless international novels. The streaming era has only made that even easier, with Masterpiece available on Prime Video, where new audiences are now embracing these stories.
Collider has now partnered with PBS to highlight a few of the most-watched and beloved Masterpiece book adaptations currently available to stream through the Prime Video add-on. These shows and films come from a range of acclaimed producers, from Masterpiece itself to Walter Presents and beyond, and aim to feature a mix of top-level talent and promising up-and-comers to bring these classic tales to life. Among the most recent programs to air is The Count of Monte Cristo, an eight-episode miniseries rendition of Alexandre Dumas‘s legendary 1846 novel. It was designed to both translate the 180-year-old story for the modern day while still keeping what made it so captivating to French readers, featuring the fan-favorite Hunger Games star Sam Claflin as the titular Edmond Dantès and Emmy nominee Bille August as the director.
First premiered overseas in 2024, The Count of Monte Cristo is as classic as revenge tales get, following the story of Edmond after he’s falsely accused of treason and sentenced to rot in a harsh island fortress without a trial. Years later, however, he escapes what was meant to be his tomb and winds up on a deserted island that houses a remarkable treasure. With his newfound fortune, he returns under the guise of the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo, a man as extravagant as he is cold and calculating, to exact revenge on those who wronged him. Vengeance has always made for good entertainment, and that remains true for the miniseries, which not only owns a stellar Certified Fresh 97% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but was also the #1 most streamed season on PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video for March.
