Peeves Still Not Officially Cast in Harry Potter Series

Just about everyone is accounted for in the Harry Potter TV show, but one particular character who was missing from the movies has yet to be announced. We are now only eight months from the season 1 premiere of Harry Potter, which will adapt the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in its entirety. This naturally means we got the bulk of those casting announcements over with several months ago, and we’ve now even had a full trailer that gives us a first look at these actors and their characters. Still, HBO is keeping some secrets.

Nearly all the new castings we have seen so far are for characters that were already present in the Harry Potter movies, yet one of the major benefits of this TV show is that it can finally bring in those names that were previously cut. As far as Philosopher’s Stone goes, that list is fairly short—the bulk will arrive in later seasons. At the very top of that list, however, is a key figure that any true Harry Potter book fan will be eager to finally see on screen.

HBO Still Hasn’t Revealed Who’s Playing Peeves In Harry Potter

Peeves the Poltergeist is an absolute Hogwarts staple, but he never appeared in a single one of the Harry Potter movies. This is something book fans complained about for years, and since HBO’s TV show is meant to be a book-faithful adaptation, Peeves is guaranteed to appear on day one of Harry’s time at Hogwarts. Still, there has been no word regarding who will play this character.

Whoever is playing Peeves isn’t technically the first one, despite the fact that the character didn’t make it into the films. Comedian Rik Mayall, known for The Young Ones and Bottom, among other projects, completed filming as Peeves the Poltergeist in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but all his scenes were left on the cutting floor. Based on reports, it seems that Mayall’s comedic behavior made it difficult for the young actors to stay in character. They were supposed to be annoyed with Peeves, but the children couldn’t hold back their laughter. This ultimately left the footage unusable.

Based on this previous casting, we can likely expect another comedian or comedy actor to play Peeves in the Harry Potter TV show. Since HBO is staying tight-lipped on the subject, they may be a rather familiar name—someone we’d all know and be excited about. Michael Sheen is a common fan cast, along with Stephen Fry, Bill Bailey, and a handful of others. Of course, only time will tell. All we can do is wait and see.

Peeves Was The Most Important Character Left Out Of The Harry Potter Movies

As previously mentioned, there was a small handful of characters left out of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone movie, most of which were relatively negligible. It’s always been a bummer that we never got a chance to meet Charlie Weasley on screen, but he was never a particularly present character anyway. Peeves, on the other hand, is a character who hung around every Harry Potter book. He could be a nuisance, often sabotaging Harry’s efforts to maneuver the castle at night without getting caught. However, he could also be quite an asset at times (especially to Fred and George).

Still, what made Peeves especially important in Harry Potter is the way he fit into the essence of what Hogwarts is. The castle is almost like a character all its own in the Harry Potter books. It’s mysterious, guiding, and very often playful. Peeves was a sort of agent for that last element. If we were to wipe his existence from the books, Hogwarts just wouldn’t be the same. Bringing him back in the Harry Potter TV show, regardless of who plays him, will ensure that the full magic and wonder of Hogwarts finally make it to the screen.
