Pokémon may have hit the 30-year mark in 2026, but we’re far from finished. Pokémon Winds & Waves was officially announced as part of the series’ 30th anniversary, and it looks… well, it looks fantastic. In 2027, we’ll be getting a brand-new tropical open-world region, new monsters, and doubtless plenty more surprises.
Naturally, the arrival of new Pokémon, like the new starters, always promises to shake things up. How will new moves or Type combinations impact competitive play, for instance? One of the more recent leaks has suggested that we’re getting a new Type combination that we’ve never had in 30 years of Pokémon, and it could be a major game-changer.
For those who don’t know (although I’m certain most of you probably do), there are plenty of Pokémon out there with Dual Types. This can broaden their movesets, give them unexpected resistances, or even make them extra weak to certain Types. Dual Types have allowed for some really unusual combos over the years. We’ve had Flying/Ground, Normal/Ghost, even Fire/Grass. I’ll be honest, I kind of thought we’d explored all the Dual Type possibilities at this point, but I was wrong.
According to the latest report from Centro Leaks, we now have a solid idea of what the Gen 10 Starter Pokémon will evolve into. As a reminder, we have the Water-Type Gecqua, Fire-Type Pombon, and Grass-Type Browt. Each of these Pokémon will gain an additional type once they evolve, so we’ll end up with:
- Browt: Grass / Ground
- Pombon: Fire / Fairy
- Gecqua: Water / Psychic
Now, Starter Pokémon ending up with a second Type isn’t particularly new. What is interesting is that Pombon will be the first ever Fire/Fairy Dual Type in Pokémon history.
“I’ve been wanting a Fire/Fairy for a while so I’m very excited to see what Pombon’s final design looks like if true,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
Another fan wrote on X: “If Pombon actually is Fire/Fairy and looks similar to Arcanine it might be a Top 10 starter of all time.”
While the Fairy Type is the newest Pokémon Type to have been introduced (it was added back in 2013 with the launch of Pokémon X & Y), it’s still kind of wild to me that it’s taken this long to get a Fire/Fairy combo. It’s the kind of matchup you’d have expected a long time ago, right?
Pokémon Winds & Waves doesn’t release until 2027, so it’ll be a while before we get any more official information on what Pombon evolves into. Centro Leaks tends to be right on the money, however, so maybe take a look at what these Starters turn into and start quietly planning your team now.
