Queen Avatar Show Plans Halted by Brian May: Here’s Why

Brian May states that he was developing a Queen avatar show but ultimately chose to stop his efforts.

In recent years, productions like the Dio hologram tour and ABBA’s Voyage residency have received a mix of criticism and praise. During a recent discussion with Absolute Radio, May disclosed that he had begun working on a similar idea for Queen.

“We examined it very seriously, especially after I witnessed the [Las Vegas] Sphere and what the Eagles accomplished with the Sphere, which I found incredible,” May confessed. “And I invested a lot of time planning what I envisioned could be a Queen show. I’ve somewhat retreated now because you can’t execute it without significant reliance on A.I., along with all the implications that entails.”

May – who elsewhere in the interview cautioned about the risks of A.I. – mentioned that he remains somewhat conflicted about the concept, both artistically and ethically.

“I don’t want to be appropriating the work of others. If you’re appropriating your own work, I’m uncertain where I stand on it, because you would be drawing from the Queen oeuvre, which perhaps is acceptable, since that’s ours,” he noted. “However, at the same time, you’re contributing to the pressures that A.I. is imposing on the world. So, I don’t know. I’m not as enthusiastic as I once was.”

Although May isn’t comfortable with reliance on A.I., he continues to imagine ways to bring Queen to life for new generations of fans.

“I believe it would be fantastic to have a permanent venue where people could go and feel as if they’re witnessing us perform live in our prime, perhaps all around the globe, maybe at all times,” he expressed. “The doors are open [with A.I.], but I’m uncertain if we’re going to walk through.”

They remain so prominent in the news and fans’ hearts that it’s quite hard to believe singer Freddie Mercury has been gone for decades now.
