Recording in Muscle Shoals: Laughing with Ozzy

“There are so many iconic places, legendary venues, and renowned studios scattered across the globe that still send shivers down my spine, you know what I mean?”

On Tuesday, May 13, John Corabi made an appearance on Loudwire Nights to discuss the highly anticipated new album from The Dead Daisies, titled Lookin’ For Trouble, which is set to release on May 30. You can listen to the entire conversation in the player located at the end of this article.

“I had the incredible opportunity to record an album in Muscle Shoals,” Corabi shared, highlighting Lookin’ For Trouble, which was produced at the iconic FAME Studios.

As he reminisced about his unforgettable experience in Muscle Shoals, Corabi recounted a particular moment that will forever remain etched in his memory during his conversation with Loudwire Nights‘ Chuck Armstrong.

“I distinctly remember sitting in the vocal booth,” he reflected.

“I had a cigarette and a whiskey in hand, singing into this vintage microphone. When I looked through the glass window, I saw a massive photo of Aretha Franklin, holding a whiskey and a cigarette, singing into the exact same microphone … Even though I consider myself a musician, a rock star, or whatever title you wish to assign, I still feel like a fan at heart.”

In addition to celebrating the release of new music from The Dead Daisies, Corabi took a moment to express his admiration and respect for Ozzy Osbourne, sharing a cherished memory from one of his first experiences attending a live Black Sabbath concert.

“My dad and my uncle were kind enough to take me to the show and drop me off,” he recalled.

“At just 13 years old, I paid $6.50 for a ticket. Back then, you saved your paper route money and bought a ticket to see Sabbath. The experience was overwhelmingly heavy and loud.”

He couldn’t help but chuckle as he remembered how he felt after the concert.

“After the show, I got into the car, and both of them looked at me and asked, ‘Were you smoking weed?’ I replied, ‘No.’ Just then, we glanced at The Spectrum, and the doors were wide open, with clouds of smoke billowing out.”

From that moment, Corabi admitted it still feels surreal to him that he grew up to become a musician and got the chance to meet some of his idols, including Ozzy.

“It instantly transports me back to when I was 13, 14, or 15,” he said.

“When you meet them, they greet you with, ‘Oh hey John, how you doing?’ It feels incredibly surreal to me.”

  • Two unforgettable jokes shared with him, one from Ozzy and another from Gene Simmons (tune in to hear Corabi deliver the actual jokes): “What’s happening? Pinch me right now. I can’t believe I saw you [KISS] 50 times as a kid, and now you’re sharing Jewish jokes in our dressing room? This is unbelievable.”
  • His drive for creativity in music: “For me, money has never been a primary motivator … What truly inspires me is the hope that even after I’m gone, people will look back at my body of work and think, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize it at the time, but he was a pretty decent songwriter.’”
  • His reflections on the sacrifices made for rock and roll: “I missed graduations, birthdays, and although it’s nothing against my ex-wives, they eventually grew weary of handling everything solo. You’re often away from home, and you give up a lot of personal moments to pursue this life — it’s just an inherent aspect of the journey.”
