When considering the best movie plot twists, many recall iconic moments like Darth Vader being revealed as Luke’s father or the astonishing truth about Tyler Durden.
However, romance films can deliver deeply emotional twists that dramatically alter your perception of the movie. Even lighthearted romantic comedies have showcased their share of remarkable plot twists that catch viewers off guard, yet upon reflection, they often make perfect sense.
My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
The premise of My Best Friend’s Wedding may seem odd at first glance. It follows Julianne, who discovers that her best male friend, Michael, is getting married and realizes her love for him, prompting her to embark on a mission to win him back. This positions her as somewhat of an antagonist.
In typical romantic comedy fashion, one might expect My Best Friend’s Wedding to reveal that Michael’s fiancée, Kimberly, is a villainous character, thus giving viewers more reason to root for Julianne. However, the film cleverly subverts this expectation.
Kimberly is kind-hearted and does not deserve to have her wedding disrupted. The film surprises audiences when Julianne sincerely apologizes for her interference, reconciles with Michael, and ultimately moves forward. While not a jaw-dropping twist, it significantly enhances the narrative.
Last Christmas (2019)
In Last Christmas, we follow Kate, a Christmas store employee who feels “half dead,” a year after receiving a heart transplant. She meets and falls for a mysterious man with whom she shares charming moments throughout the film.
However, this man often vanishes for days without explanation. It is ultimately revealed that she has been communicating with his spirit, as he is the person whose heart she received during her surgery.
This twist allows the romance to conclude in an unconventional manner. However, it may not be the most unexpected twist since the film shares its name with the classic Christmas song “Last Christmas,” which contains lyrics about giving one’s heart away. Some viewers predicted this twist based on that connection.
Love, Simon (2018)
Based on a novel from 2015, the film Love, Simon was groundbreaking as the first gay teen romantic comedy produced by a major studio. It follows Simon, a closeted teenager navigating his life while being blackmailed by someone at school who threatens to expose his secret.
During this time, Simon develops feelings for someone he communicates with anonymously online. The film builds up to the moment of revealing this person’s identity. When his friends and family finally learn the truth, Simon meets the guy on a Ferris wheel when Bram arrives and sits beside him.
Bram is someone Simon had previously crushed on in the movie but was dismissed after seeing him kiss a girl. This revelation is both surprising and heartwarming, providing a joyful conclusion to the film.
Atonement (2007)
On the other end of the spectrum lies Atonement, which concludes without a happy ending. Based on a novel as well, this film begins in the 1930s and follows Robbie Turner and Cecilia Tallis whose lives are turned upside down when Cecilia’s younger sister falsely accuses Robbie of rape.
The narrative reveals Cecilia and Robbie’s journey through life events including Robbie’s imprisonment and deployment to war. They eventually reunite but reject Briony when she attempts to make amends for her actions.
However, Briony discloses that part of their story is entirely fabricated. Cecilia and Robbie never had a chance at happiness together, as Cecilia perished during a bombing in London while Robbie died in combat. This revelation devastates viewers and transforms the film into an even greater tragedy.
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
The premise of Definitely, Maybe is incredibly sweet. It revolves around a political consultant attempting to explain his impending divorce to his daughter by recounting his past romantic experiences. Like his daughter, viewers expect this tale to lead him back to realizing his love for her mother.
As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that his true love is not her mother, but rather April—who has always been part of his life yet never progressed beyond friendship.
This unexpected conclusion is both romantic and touching. Watching young Maya come to terms with her father’s divorce as an opportunity for him to find true happiness with someone he loves is both heartwarming and delightful.
