Steam is doing that thing where they start tempting you with a little taster of a quality game, allowing you to get quietly hooked on it and then end up blowing cash the second the free trial expires. They’re basically dealers at this point. This time, the game in question is Marathon, Bungie’s dark sci-fi extraction shooter from the studio behind Halo and Destiny. The game only launched earlier this year, but anyone curious about Bungie’s latest trip into space, now’s the time to grab your controllers, your keyboards and your mice. Mouses? We don’t know the correct plural.
Marathon is available to play for free on Steam until June 9, which is obviously a bargain, because the game usually costs $39.99. However, the standard edition is also discounted down to $27.99 and the deluxe edition is $41.99. Basically, it’s a good week to find out whether Bungie’s new PvPvE survival extraction FPS is your jam before committing real human monies to it.
Released earlier this year, Marathon takes players to the dark sci-fi world of Tau Ceti IV, a colony full of other Runners, hostile security forces, a gamut of unhospitable environments and rage at being killed before you realized you’d been hit. Players can scavenge zones alone or with a crew, but be prepared to head into PvP combat if you find supplies are limited, and you’ll need to get ready using the scarce supplies you already have.
What Is Marathon?
Marathon is developed and published byBungie, the studio behindHaloandDestiny. The game is described on Steam as a“PvPvE survival extraction FPS,”with players entering hostile zones, gathering loot, surviving limitless enemy threats, and trying to exfil safely before things go horribly wrong.Progression is built around power, cosmetics, stronger builds, and the eternal video game question:should you risk everything for one more run? Obviously yes.Terrible idea.Do it anyway.
The game has also earned very positive feedback from fans, with players praising its worldbuilding, gunplay, atmosphere, and sound design. One Steam reviewer with nearly400 hours in the game called its world“unique”and praised the way it expresses itself through“shapes and forms, colours and sounds, feel and impact.”
Marathonis available now on PC,PlayStation5,and Xbox SeriesX/S.The game is free to play on Steam until June9.
