After three years at the helm, Seán McGirr is leaving McQueen as creative director. Kering installed the Irish designer at the helm of the house at the end of 2023, after Sarah Burton departed from her role as creative director, which she had held for 13 years. Seán McGirr said: “I leave with profound gratitude for the dedication of the studio and atelier, and craftspeople.” The announcement is fresh off the heels of the brand’s grand return to London Fashion Week last month. New creative leadership will be announced soon.

“What a joyous day.” [charmedp123]

“I hope that after this they’ll just shut down the label and let it rest.” [nunova]

“There is nobody suitable for this post, except maybe Hussein Chalayan or Olivier Theyskens. But given that they were his contemporaries, they would never accept it if offered. Shutter it, and redistribute the workforce among existing Kering brands. Just let this one lay dormant for a couple decades.” [DesEsseintes]

“As someone who worked for Alexander McQueen for many years, and watched the downfall and dilution of the brand, I can’t help but be overjoyed. Now, please SHUT THE HOUSE DOWN!” [justpassingthrough]

“Sean’s collections were NOT McQueen, and it really hasn’t been since Lee has been gone.” [Imelanie]
