If you’re going to drum for Slipknot, you must be ready to face comparisons with previous drummers, as was the case for Eloy Casagrande, whose drumming legacy is now linked to Joey Jordison.
What Does Slipknot Expect From Their Drummers?
Casagrande recently shared with Colombian YouTube channel Radionica what his Slipknot bandmates seek from their drummers and whether he should attempt to emulate past performances.
“I remember from day one when I was playing with them, Clown [Slipknot’s Shawn Crahan] came to me and said, ‘Man, you don’t have to be concerned about playing everything right. There is no wrong or right, but there is the soul of the band. There is the idea of the band, the attitude, the energy; that’s what we want.’

However, Casagrande did not neglect learning the drum parts as he embraced his full-time role with the band. His aim is not only to perform the drum arrangements but also to “respect” them.
“It’s not just about playing notes correctly; it’s about having a different attitude. It’s about having the energy to keep the soul of the band alive.”
Does Slipknot Want Another Joey Jordison?
Casagrande joined Slipknot in 2024, taking over from Jay Weinberg, who had been part of the band since 2015. Weinberg also served as a touring drummer for Slipknot after founding member Joey Jordison left in 2013.
“Replacing Joey is a very difficult task. Those are big shoes to fill,” Casagrande remarked regarding his role as Slipknot’s drummer.
Fortunately for Casagrande, that is apparently not what Slipknot desires from him.
“They don’t want another Joey in the band. They made that very clear from day one. They’re not trying to make me play like Joey. They want me to be myself.”
According to Casagrande, two key attributes Slipknot seeks in their drummer are “personality” and a willingness to bring new ideas.

How Will Brazilian Influence Shape Slipknot’s New Music?
A native of Brazil, Casagrande previously played drums for Sepultura. He mentions that some influences from his home country naturally integrate into his drumming style.
This was something that initially made Crahan uncertain when he heard Casagrande playing Brazilian rhythms between songs.
“He was like, ‘Okay, but you know this is a metal band, right? This is a fucking metal band,'” Casagrande recalled Crahan telling him.

As Casagrande grew more comfortable playing with his new bandmates, they also became more accepting of his unique style.
“Nowadays, it’s totally fine because during recording sessions, several times (Crahan) came to me and said, ‘Oh, what do you think about incorporating some Brazilian stuff, Brazilian rhythms?’
