Weekend box office numbers are in, and as predicted, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains at the top for a sixth consecutive weekend with $18 million. This marks only a 20% decrease from last weekend, bringing its domestic total to $918 million. It now appears poised to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s $936 million record and is likely to become the highest-grossing film of all time domestically within a week. Could it reach a billion dollars? It certainly seems possible. Internationally, it has amassed an impressive $2.4 billion. However, it will not claim the title of the top worldwide film, as Avatar still holds that title with $2.9 billion, followed by Avengers: Endgame at $2.7 billion.
The Odyssey continues its incredible run
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey secured second place this weekend, only declining 9% from last weekend to earn $13 million. Its impressive staying power throughout the summer can be attributed largely to its IMAX release, with theaters extending its run, particularly on the exclusive 70mm screens. It has now grossed $584 million domestically.
Coyote vs. Acme holds strong
Coyote vs. Acme performed well this weekend, decreasing 29% in its second week to earn $11.3 million and bringing its total to $33 million. While these numbers are not blockbuster-level, considering its history and Ketchup Entertainment’s grassroots approach, it has turned into a pleasant sleeper hit.
By Any Means takes fourth place
Paramount’s By Any Means, starring Mark Wahlberg as Mafia hitman Gregory Scarpa, managed to secure fourth place with a gross of $7.4 million, which is considered a weak opening due to insufficient reviews to support its box office performance. Fifth place went to Insidious: Out of the Further, which earned another $6.5 million this weekend for a total of $54 million. It narrowly outperformed Pixar’s 20th anniversary re-release of Cars, which made a solid $6.1 million.
Buddy continues to surprise

Roadside Attractions has found a legitimate cult hit with Buddy. This film, a twist on Barney & Friends (if he were a killer), actually saw an increase of 3% this weekend for a gross of $5.7 million and a strong total of $15.7 million. It joins Obsession and Backrooms as an unconventional horror success this summer, outpacing many larger-budget genre films.
Onslaught and Fall 2 miss the top 10
This weekend saw neither Onslaught nor Fall 2: Deadpoint make it into the top 10. Onslaught earned a disappointing $1.8 million and received a poor C CinemaScore rating. In contrast, Fall 2 performed slightly better with $2.3 million but still failed to secure a spot in the top 10.
Holdovers round out the chart
The remaining list was filled with holdovers. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie made $3.3 million for a domestic total of $48 million. Meanwhile, The End of Oak Street, which has become one of the summer’s biggest flops, earned just $2.9 million for a weak total of $50 million.
The top 10 concluded with Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, which has been another major flop, adding only $2.7 million to its dismal domestic total of $13 million — quite unfortunate.
Can Practical Magic 2 work its magic next weekend?
This coming week, WB hopes that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will enchant audiences with Practical Magic 2. Will it surpass $40 million? Share your thoughts in the comments!
