Spider-Noir Future and Season 2 Prospects for Nicolas Cage

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Noir season 1, episode 8.

Spider-Noir season 1 ends with a bang, but now it’s time to explore what the future holds for Nicolas Cage’s debut TV role. Sony Pictures Television has delivered yet another Spider-Man adjacent story, with this venture moving off the big screen and into the living room with Nicolas Cage’s incredible turn as Ben Reilly, aka, The Spider, debuting on Prime Video as an 8-episode single season.

After tackling the role of voicing Spider-Man Noir in the 2018 animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Cage has finally gotten the chance to embody the character in live-action. This 1930s noir-style crime series follows a more worn version of the Web-Slinger than fans may be familiar with, but following the debut season, it appears as though Ben is ready to swing back into action.

Ben Reilly’s Story Is Far From Over In Spider-Noir

Spider-Noir obviously follows an older version of Spider-Man than most fans are familiar with, with the 62-year-old Cage being cast in the titular leading role. And while the series reveals that he became a prolific hero in New York for several years after gaining his powers, the story opens at a moment when Ben Reilly has already retired from his superhero duties for several years.

Obviously, this doesn’t remain the case for long, and Reilly is soon seen webbing up bad guys, and trying to restore peace and order in the city, but by the end of season 1, his return becomes a significant event as many members of the public see The Spider face off against the powered-up henchmen of crime boss, Silvermane.

Following this showdown, Ben Reilly returns to his office, alongside his dear friends and colleagues, and it appears as though he has a new lease on life. However, the story does resolve in such a way that it seems like Ben Reilly could simply get a happily ever after, though not a traditional one, as he finds his community and continues to operate as a hero.

With that in mind, there is a case to be made for how this could expand into further seasons and an expansion of the story, or if this will simply conclude the story of Ben Reilly on the small screen.

Showrunner Oren Uziel, alongside producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, shared that they would like to see the series expand into future seasons. In discussions with The Hollywood Reporter, they emphasized that the show had yet to be renewed, but that they would gladly bring the team back together and expand on the Spider-Noir story.

In addition, they also hinted at a possible time jump to place Ben Reilly in a World War II setting and see how this character engages with that horrific event. Evidently, this is a huge departure from what has been seen with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, but it’s a fascinating, fresh take that many fans would absolutely show up for.

Spider-Noir Is Likely To Get Renewed For Season 2

Sony is keen to keep making Spider-Man stories in one format or another, and despite them recently canning the villain universe that they had been establishing, it seems highly likely that they want to make the most of the brand. And with a major A-list celebrity like Nicolas Cage being willing to appear in a TV role for the first time for this series, it adds pressure to renew the show and capitalize on his unique talents.

On top of that, Spider-Noir is already enjoying incredible success in terms of reviews from both audiences and critics, with Rotten Tomatoes recording 90% approval ratings from critics, and a further 92% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. All of this combines to build a strong case to renew the series and keep exploring this intriguing alternate world for The Spider.

However, with the show appearing on Prime Video, it’s not just Sony and the audience that need to be on board to renew the show. Prime’s reputation for canceling shows isn’t quite as intense as some other streamers, but until they green-light a second season, Spider-Noir’s future is hanging in the balance.
