Most fans of Star Trek will quickly tell you that what sets the series apart from other long-running science fiction franchises is its greater focus on scientific exploration than on actual space battles. Yet each entry in the larger Trek franchise often finds Starfleet vessels engaging in battle with opposing forces, whether it’s aliens from another galaxy or even their fellow officers. This has yielded plenty of iconic moments, from the deadly chase that defines Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to the opening battle that sets the stage for Star Trek: Discovery. The most iconic Trek battle, though, would end up shaking fans to their core and redefining the franchise.
This battle takes place in the iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter, “The Best of Both Worlds.” The malevolent cyberintelligence known as the Borg assimilates an entire colony, drawing the attention of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D; after the Borg abduct and assimilate Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Starfleet engages a Borg cube near the star Wolf 359. The resulting battle is an outright massacre, as none of the ships at Wolf 359 can match the Borg’s firepower or their ability to adapt to attacks. It would also serve as the launching point for one of Star Trek‘s best series.

While “The Best of Both Worlds” doesn’t fully depict the Battle of Wolf 359, it highlights the sheer horror Starfleet faces as the Enterprise-D travels through a massive field of shattered starships. This battle would be revisited in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s pilot episode, “Emissary,” where things took an even more tragic turn. During the battle, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) was aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga when it was destroyed by the Borg; although he managed to save his son Jake, his wife, Jennifer, was among the Saratoga‘s casualties. In its very first episode, Deep Space Nine manages to sell the horrors the Borg represent and underlines the aftermath of Wolf 359, as Sisko struggles to let go of his anger toward Picard.
Sisko isn’t the only survivor of Wolf 359, nor was he the only Starfleet officer to hold a grudge against Picard. In the final season of Star Trek: Picard, Picard often butts heads with Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the captain of the U.S.S. Titan. During the episode “No Win Scenario,” Shaw reveals that he was at Wolf 359 and survived because his commanding officer placed him in a shuttle just before the ship he was on was destroyed. Even The Next Generation would return to the battle, with the Season 4 episode “The Drumhead” featuring an overzealous admiral revealing the depth of its destruction to Picard:
“It must have been awful for you, actually becoming one of them, being forced to use your vast knowledge of Starfleet operations to aid the Borg. Just how many of our ships were lost? Thirty-nine. And a loss of life, I believe, measured at nearly eleven thousand.”
