Starfighter Release Date: Ryan Gosling’s New Lucasfilm Film

Get ready to embark on an epic journey back to a galaxy far, far away, as Lucasfilm and Disney have officially greenlit a highly anticipated new addition to the Star Wars universe, featuring acclaimed actor Ryan Gosling and directed by the talented Shawn Levy. This exciting new film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, is scheduled for a thrilling theatrical release on May 28, 2027. This date is just shy of one year after the release of another highly awaited installment, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Fans are buzzing with anticipation as they look forward to this new cinematic adventure.

This strategic move indicates a significant shift in Disney’s approach to producing Star Wars content, which has predominantly been delivered through streaming series in recent years. Unfortunately, many of the new shows, including The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew, have not resonated well with audiences, leading to underwhelming performances. This new film seems to represent a more traditional return to the franchise’s roots, offering a classic cinematic experience that fans have been craving.

Importantly, Star Wars: Starfighter will serve as a legitimate sequel, taking place chronologically after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. According to an official release from Disney, the film is described as follows:

“Star Wars: Starfighter,” directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is a standalone adventure that unfolds approximately five years after the dramatic conclusion of 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” This film will commence production this Fall and promises to deliver an entirely new adventure featuring original characters, set in an unexplored timeframe within the beloved franchise.

In previous reports, we learned that actress Mikey Madison declined a significant role in the film, which has sparked interest and speculation among fans regarding the casting choices.

Shawn Levy is no stranger to blockbuster success, having recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine, which became one of Marvel’s highest-grossing films in years. His impressive portfolio also includes the beloved Night at the Museum trilogy, along with Free Guy, Real Steel, and other notable projects, making him a fitting choice to helm this exciting new chapter in the Star Wars saga.

During the Star Wars Celebration, attendees were treated to the first footage from The Mandalorian & Grogu, which featured thrilling moments, including The Mandalorian breaching the cockpit of an AT-AT Walker and dispatching a group of stormtroopers. This preview also provided a first look at Sigourney Weaver’s character and a glimpse of Jeremy Allen White’s Rotta the Hutt, further heightening excitement for the upcoming series.
