The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues to perform well at the box office, but has not yet reached the strong billion milestone and show signs of surpassing its predecessor. This animated film, released in early April and featuring voice talents such as Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy, is the sequel to the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros Movie, which earned $1.36 billion globally.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie crosses $800 million worldwide
Thanks to another successful weekend, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has exceeded $800 million at the global box office, bringing it closer to the $1 billion target.
Despite facing competition from films like Project Hail Mary, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, and the recently released Michael, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now stands at $831 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo. Over its latest weekend, the film added more than $21 million to its domestic total.
With Jaafar Jackson’s Michael biopic now in theaters, competition has intensified. The biopic has already grossed approximately $217 million globally during its opening weekend, setting a record for the highest opening weekend collection for a biopic. However, it fell short of this year’s highest debut of $375 million, achieved by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary, released on March 20, has also surpassed the $600 million mark at the global box office.
Following the tremendous success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, there has been speculation about a potential sequel. However, in March, during an interview with Polygon, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto dismissed the notion of a cinematic universe. He stated, “I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] where all Nintendo characters would be joining [together in one film].”
