Since its launch on the PlayStation 3 in 2013, The Last of Us has rapidly become a cultural phenomenon, leading to a successful sequel, The Last of Us Part II, numerous remasters, a live-action HBO series, books, board games, and much more. Anything you can think of has been created.
Created, written, and co-directed by Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us transports players to a post-apocalyptic America where they follow the journey of a smuggler tasked with transporting a young girl across several states to uncover why she is immune to an infection that has turned humanity into zombie-like creatures.
What Does The Last Of Us Part 3 Have In Store?
Despite multiple projects associated with the franchise, there has yet to be an official confirmation regarding a potential The Last of Us Part III. As of now, The Last of Us Part III is not in development, and there are no indications that it will be in the future once Naughty Dog finishes its current project, the new IP titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
However, with Druckmann providing mixed signals over the years, it is understandable that some fans remain hopeful. At one point, the head of Naughty Dog mentioned that “this could be it,” suggesting that TLOU and TLOU Part II might be the only installments. Conversely, during the Grounded documentary, he claimed that “it does feel like there is probably one more chapter to the story.”
This statement was made back in 2024, and since then, Druckmann has kept quiet about the franchise’s future. That was until earlier this year.
Have We Seen The Last Of Ellie And Abby?
In March, Druckmann hinted at the future of the franchise and a potential The Last of Us Part III through an Instagram post. He shared an early sketch of Joel and Ellie and wrote, “Cleaning out the garage today and stumbled on my original sketches from 2003 for a game pitch about a man, his surrogate daughter, and a trek across a broken America.”
He added, “Been a wild journey. Grateful for every part of it, especially the few stops that remain on the road ahead.”
The phrase “the few stops that remain on the road ahead” stands out significantly. While Druckmann is not confirming anything here, could these “few stops” refer to a potential third installment in the franchise?
For now, all we can do is wait as Druckmann and Naughty Dog prioritize Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, if Druckmann has a story to tell, he will undoubtedly share it, hopefully in the form of The Last of Us Part III.
