The Mandalorian Spin-Off Receives Major Update After 5 Years

Key Takeaways

  • Star Wars Content: The year starts with a wealth of new Star Wars content, including Maul — Shadow Lord.
  • Theatrical Release: Fans can enjoy The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters, marking the return to the big screen.
  • Boba Fett’s Journey: The Book of Boba Fett will continue through a new Marvel comic later this year.
  • Creative Team: The upcoming comic is written by Rodney Barnes and Will Sliney, known for their work on other Star Wars titles.

Star Wars fans are drowning in a surplus of content to start the year, which has been the case more often than not since the launch of Disney+ in 2019. The first Star Wars project of the year was Maul — Shadow Lord, and after debuting to a near-perfect 99% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the show was picked up for Season 2. Star Wars fans are also heading out to the theater for the first time since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 to see a new movie on the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film is a direct continuation of the first three seasons of The Mandalorian, which premiered in 2018 alongside the launch of Disney’s premiere streaming platform. Plenty of iconic Star Wars characters featured in the first three seasons of The Mandalorian, including Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), and even Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison).

Boba Fett was a key figure in the original Star Wars trilogy and even a secondary character in the prequel trilogy as the son of Jango Fett. Not long after the second season of The Mandalorian, Star Wars released a full spin-off show, The Book of Boba Fett, but the show was met with a divisive reception. This wasn’t the fault of the titular character at all, but Disney never picked the show up for Season 2, and Boba Fett has not been seen since the finale, despite the continued expansion of the MandoVerse. The Book of Boba Fett story will continue later this year, though, with a new Marvel sequel comic, which will see the new crime lord of Tatooine continuing to rule the planet with justice and fairness. Fennec Shand (Ming Na Wen), Boba Fett’s closest enforcer, will also be featured in the new comic book.
