Three Amigos Streaming Home: Steve Martin and Martin Short Return

Long before Steve Martin and Martin Short became iconic neighbors in the hit series Only Murders in the Building and engaged in hilarious murder-solving escapades, they starred together as part of the dynamic trio in the beloved classic comedy film, Three Amigos! This classic Western comedy, which marks the beginning of their fruitful collaboration, is set to find a new streaming home starting August 1, 2025. Viewers will have the opportunity to enjoy this film for free on the ad-supported streaming platform, Pluto TV.

Three Amigos! was the result of a unique partnership involving Martin, the legendary Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, and the talented musician Randy Newman, who co-wrote the screenplay. The film underwent several changes during production, with renowned director Steven Spielberg initially attached to helm the project. Various actors, including John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Robin Williams, were considered for leading roles. Ultimately, the film featured Martin alongside fellow SNL star Chevy Chase and Short, who was recommended for the role by his SCTV co-star John Candy. The direction was entrusted to John Landis, who faced a tense moment with Chase, stemming from off-color jokes related to a tragic incident involving Landis on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. Although Three Amigos! initially struggled at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics, it gradually built a dedicated fan base through cable television and home video releases.

Set against the backdrop of 1916, Three Amigos! follows the adventures of three silent film comedians: Lucky Day (played by Martin), Dusty Bottoms (portrayed by Chase), and Ned Nederlander (depicted by Short). These three characters are known for their roles in a series of comedy Westerns as the infamous Three Amigos. After demanding a pay raise from their studio head (Joe Mantegna), they find themselves unexpectedly fired. A twist of fate leads them to receive a telegram from Santa Poco, Mexico, which they mistakenly interpret as an invitation to perform. However, Carmen (Patrice Martinez, known for her role in Beetlejuice), who sent the telegram, believes that these men are genuine heroes and has summoned them to save her village from a gang of ruthless bandits led by the notorious El Guapo (Alfonso Arau, acclaimed for his performance in Like Water for Chocolate). Out of their depth, the trio must adapt their cinematic skills to the challenges of real-life heroism.

Despite its initial commercial failure, Three Amigos! has showcased the undeniable chemistry between Steve Martin and Martin Short, who have collaborated on numerous projects over the years. Their joint efforts include the Father of the Bride film series, a memorable stand-up comedy special, and hosting together on SNL. Fans can look forward to seeing them reunite in the highly anticipated fifth season of their Hulu comedy series, Only Murders in the Building, where they continue their comedic journey alongside Selena Gomez, who plays the millennial voice of reason in their amateur sleuthing escapades.

The comedy classic Three Amigos! will be available for free streaming on Pluto TV starting August 1, 2025. Be sure to check back with Collider for more exciting updates and information.
