In an exciting celebration of its legacy, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is proudly marking its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate this significant milestone, Disney has announced an eagerly anticipated 4K Ultra HD release of this iconic cult classic set to launch in 2025.
The Walt Disney Studios Restoration team has dedicated ten months to meticulously remastering The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This extensive process involved a comprehensive digital scan and preservation technique designed to ensure that every single frame of this beloved film is presented with unparalleled clarity and vibrancy. The upcoming release will also include a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track, enhancing the auditory experience with remarkable depth and dimension. Moreover, the original mono audio has been completely restored and will be part of this release, ensuring that fans can enjoy the film in both its new and original formats.
“It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many,” expressed Kevin Schaeffer, the Director of Restoration & Library Management. He further emphasized, “Bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both long-time fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”
Additionally, producer Lou Adler reflected on the film’s incredible journey, stating, “When The Rocky Horror Picture Show was first released, no one thought it would be around very long let alone…50 years. What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”
Directed by the talented Jim Sharman, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is adapted from the musical play written by Richard O’Brien, who also wrote the screenplay. Featuring a lively rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack and a cast of eccentric characters led by Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the film has evolved into a cult phenomenon fueled by midnight screenings and enthusiastic audience participation. Remarkably, it holds the title for the longest-running theatrical release in history, continuing to be screened in theaters worldwide.
While an official release date for the 4K Ultra HD edition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show has not yet been announced, fans can look forward to this exciting release later this year, along with a special theatrical release.
