Learning about the favorite films of influential filmmakers, particularly those whose work I admire, has always piqued my interest. More often than not, this inquiry leads me to uncover hidden cinematic gems that I might not have encountered otherwise. To celebrate a special episode of The Video Archives Podcast, renowned directors Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary have shared their current top three films, providing a unique glimpse into their cinematic preferences.
Here are the top three cinematic masterpieces selected by Quentin Tarantino:
- The Man in the Iron Mask (1939) directed by James Whale
- The Son of Monte Cristo (1940) directed by Rowland V. Lee
- The Last of the Mohicans (1936) directed by George B. Seitz
In addition, here are the top three films chosen by Roger Avary:
- A Clockwork Orange (1971) directed by Stanley Kubrick
- Sorcerer (1977) directed by William Friedkin
- M (1931) directed by Fritz Lang
These selections showcase some truly captivating films, with Sorcerer being a standout favorite of mine, known for its intense narrative and powerful performances that leave a lasting impression.
Recently, Tarantino elaborated on the reasons why fans should tune into The Video Archives Podcast. He expressed, “I genuinely want you to engage with our show and enjoy it. While I may not have seen every film reviewed by Pauline Kael, I take pleasure in reading those critiques.” He emphasized, “Our show is not designed to simply recommend films. If we happen to suggest a movie that piques your interest, fantastic! Our goal is to discuss films that excite both Roger and me, and that’s what matters most. The discussion is key, even if we cover movies we don’t particularly enjoy.“
The acclaimed writer and director is currently focused on crafting what he envisions as his tenth and final film. However, before that project debuts, we might witness a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. David Fincher is slated to direct Brad Pitt in this anticipated follow-up, which is set to be released on Netflix.
Over the past month, snippets of information regarding this sequel have emerged, including a potential title. Rumors suggest it could be called The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth. Additionally, the character Cliff Booth is expected to transition into a new role as a Hollywood studio fixer. Further speculation indicates that this sequel will take place approximately eight years after the events depicted in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There are even whispers that Leonardo DiCaprio may reprise his role as Rick Dalton, although it is likely to be a brief appearance if it materializes.
