The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced late Tuesday that he is retracting his threats to attack Iranian bridges, power plants, and other civilian targets. His decision hinges on Iran agreeing to a two-week ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also mentioned that Iran has proposed a “workable” 10-point peace plan that could potentially end the war initiated by the U.S. and Israel on February 28. Earlier on Tuesday, Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” reiterating an 8 p.m. EST deadline to finalize a deal.

Trump Pulls Back Iran Threat Amid Peace Plan Proposal
In a post on his social media platform, Donald Trump stated that Iran could agree to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz” and indicated that he would then “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.” He referenced discussions with Pakistani officials as the foundation for these negotiations.
The update was posted at 6:32 local Washington D.C. time, approximately an hour and a half before his deadline. Additionally, the president noted in his post that Iran has provided “a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, who requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran and peace in the Middle East. We received a 10-point proposal from Iran and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor to have this long-term problem close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” stated the Truth Social post.
Donald Trump had previously warned on Tuesday that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not comply with his latest deadline for reaching a deal. His terms include reopening the strait through which one-fifth of the world’s oil is transported during peacetime.
Since the war began, Trump has consistently set deadlines tied to threats but has often extended them. Tehran had previously rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal from Egyptian, Pakistani, and Turkish mediators while seeking a permanent resolution to the conflict.
Iran Vowed To Reciprocate Trump’s Energy
The representative from Iran at the U.N., Amir-Saeid Iravani, stated that these threats “constitute incitement to war crimes and potentially genocide.” Iravani further asserted that Iran would “take immediate and proportionate reciprocal measures” if Trump proceeds with devastating strikes.
For context, the U.S. and Israel have conducted numerous attacks against Iran targeting its military capabilities, leadership, and nuclear program. In response, Iran has launched attacks against Israel and Gulf Arab neighbors, resulting in regional chaos along with significant economic and political repercussions.
Earlier on Tuesday, Iran’s president announced that 14 million people, including himself, have volunteered to fight for their country. The president expressed that these volunteers are prepared to sacrifice their lives for their nation.
More than 14 million proud Iranians have so far registered to sacrifice their lives to defend Iran. I too have been, am, and will remain devoted to giving my life for Iran. https://t.co/B9GBHAAEMu

Additionally, a general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that Iran would “deprive the U.S. and its allies of the region’s oil and gas for years” and escalate its attacks across the Gulf region if Trump follows through with his threats.
Iran remained resolute in its position despite Trump asserting that U.S. forces could destroy all bridges in Iran within hours. Trump also claimed that U.S. forces could reduce all power plants to rubble in roughly the same time frame.
“Civilization” Death Threat Caught National And International Heat
Late Tuesday, Pakistan’s prime minister urged Trump to extend his deadline by two weeks to facilitate diplomatic efforts. In a post on X, Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has been facilitating negotiations, also requested that Iran agree to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks.
Before this deadline passed, airstrikes targeted two bridges and a train station. Additionally, U.S. forces struck military infrastructure on Kharg Island, which is crucial for Iranian oil production. It remains unclear whether these airstrikes were directly linked to Trump’s threats regarding civilian targets. At least two targets were associated with Iran’s rail network. Furthermore, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli warplanes attacked bridges and railways in Iran. In response, Tehran fired upon Israel and Saudi Arabia, leading to the temporary closure of a significant bridge.
The alarming threats made by Trump between Easter Sunday and Tuesday appeared not to consider potential harm to civilians. His statements prompted reactions from Democrats in Congress as well as officials from various international organizations who argued that such strikes would violate international law.
In Rome, Pope Leo XIV remarked on Tuesday that these threats were “truly unacceptable” and would constitute violations of international law if carried out. Additionally, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot indicated that attacks targeting civilian infrastructure could be classified as war crimes.
