Twilight Princess Arrives on Switch at Last

The arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Nintendo GameCube and Wii was a significant moment for longtime fans of the franchise, as they finally experienced the darker tone they had been requesting from the developers for years.

It’s a brilliant and beautiful game that fans still regard as a high point, even if acquiring a copy to play on the original hardware can be challenging these days. If you have a copy, playing the game via emulation is often much easier, primarily because Nintendo has not officially made the game playable on the Switch.

However, clever fans have found ways around this, and it is now possible to play the game on your current handheld, although some technical know-how is required to set it up.

Link brandishing the Master Sword Twilight Princess HD

On YouTube, the channel HandHeldo shared footage of Twilight Princess running on the original Nintendo Switch, and it looks and runs brilliantly.

So how does it all work? Essentially, this has been made possible because the original GameCube version of the game has been entirely decompiled. This means that the base code has been converted into a human-readable format, allowing a native version to be brought over to PC.

From there, you’ll need to set up custom firmware on your Switch which might sound intimidating but is actually manageable from a technical standpoint. Next, you’ll need to install the Dusk launcher (the project created by those who decompiled the game) on an SD card and boot your Switch with the custom firmware.

After that point, it’s relatively straightforward, but there are detailed guides online that walk you through each step of the process, making it achievable for most with the right hardware.

If you find it difficult to go through all that, playing the game via emulation on PC is certainly an option with much less hassle. Regardless, Twilight Princess has made a significant comeback in many players’ minds, with a large portion of the community hoping that it will inspire the next entry in the series whenever that may be.
