“In some ways, ‘Metal’ serves as a profound exploration of the experience of being alive and existing within a human body,” Stokes elaborates. “This awareness has intensified for me over the last few years, during which I have been on what one could describe as a ‘health journey.’ It has been a process of self-discovery and reflection.”
“For significant portions of the past few years, I felt as though my body was merely a vehicle that had served me well thus far but was gradually breaking down—something I felt largely powerless to control,” she reflects. “The intricacies of life resemble a Rube Goldberg machine, where each improbable step leads us to this moment. My curiosity about the world and myself fuels my desire to learn, and despite my body feeling like a malfunctioning machine, I continue to marvel at its complexity and resilience.”
“I can simultaneously hold this knowledge in one hand, while with the other, I can point at my reflection, criticizing myself as ‘you are s–t’ or ‘ugly’ or ‘worthless,’” Stokes shares. “I often find myself responding to any suggestion that I might achieve even the smallest accomplishment with a firm ‘no.’ These sentiments are variations of the ‘short word’ referenced within the song, encapsulating the struggle of self-acceptance and the journey towards self-love.”
Furthermore, The Beths have revealed plans for an extensive global tour that will kick off in the U.K. in September, followed by a series of exhilarating shows across Europe. The tour will culminate in a robust 26-date series of performances throughout North America from October to November, providing fans with numerous opportunities to experience their electrifying live shows.
