The record-breaking release of the first teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping prompted past movies in the blockbuster franchise to witness a sudden viewership spike on iTunes earlier this week. And that’s exactly what happened with the first Wicked movie as well some days later, when its sequel, Wicked: For Good, shattered all expectations at the box office. The new film is currently projected to gross around $150 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, a jump from the first film’s $112 million haul during the same period last year. But thanks to interest in the sequel, audiences are also flocking to Wicked at home. The first movie was essentially among the most-watched titles on the domestic Prime Video charts in the last couple of days, knocking out holdovers such as Playdate and Red One.
On Thursday, the movie peaked at the number two spot on the domestic Prime Video charts, according to FlixPatrol. It fell by one spot on Friday; on both occasions, the number one Prime Video title in the country was the controversial After the Hunt. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, After the Hunt deals with the fallout of a grave allegation made by a Yale student against one of her professors. The movie stars Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, and was given a theatrical run prior to its Prime Video debut. But it ended up tanking both critically and commercially — After the Hunt holds a 37% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed under $10 million at the box office against a budget that has been reported to be as high as $80 million.
Critical Reception for ‘Wicked 2’ Has Been More Muted
Wicked, on the other hand, made more than $750 million globally last year; of this total, a staggering $475 million came from domestic theaters. The movie earned 10 Oscar nominations in total and is now sitting at an 88% score on RT. Like the first film, Wicked: For Good has also been directed by Jon M. Chu; it brings back stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in their Oscar-nominated roles. While critical reception has been slightly muted — the movie is sitting at a 70% RT score — it’s expected to be a bigger hit at the box office. You can watch Wicked at home and Wicked: For Good in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
